There’s a new Star Control game coming

StarCon

Star Control II is a favourite amongst many older gamers, and for good bloody reason. The 1992 Dos game by the delightful folks from Skylanders creator Toys for Bob is a story-driven space exploration game like no other.

The game was wildly ambitious for the time, but managed to deliver – giving gamers a world of exoplanet, hyperspace travel, interstellar and interspecies diplomacy, resource gathering and so, so much more. It was, and still is one of the greatest games that has ever been made. And it absolutely, in no way whatsoever, received a sequel – no matter what the internet tells you.

There is, however, a prequel coming to console and PC in the middle of next year. It’s a prequel called Star Control Origins. Before you get excited though, there are some great big caveats here. The game is being made by Stardock – with the creators of the series having nothing to do with the game whatsoever. Worse still is that its new rights owners only own the name. They have no rights to the actual content – so you’ll see no Umgah, Orz, Spathi or Ur-Quan. The game will still focus on interaction between alien races, but it’ll have a new collection.

“Star Control has always been about creating a fantastic galactic sandbox to play in and weaving a compelling story around it that gives meaning and wonder to their adventure,” says Brad Wardell, Executive Producer of Star Control: Origins. “With Origins, we want to bring the style, humor and game play elements we loved from the classic series and then expand it with features made possible on modern hardware.”

They’ve created a teaser, which you can watch here.

As much as I’d like to believe it’ll be good, I just don’t think it will be. No Spathi? No sale.

I think what he’s saying is that, like apostrophes, they shouldn’t.

I’m a terrible person though so probably not a good example.

Examples cannot be taken by the examplee, they are, implicitly and for all time, owned by the exampler.

How would I take the example when I AM the example? I’ll take the reference and/or acknowledgement of being a good example of a terrible person though.

Can’t believe I had to actually explain that.

The game lacks replayability I’ll give you that. But the races (old and new – except the creepy Syreen) were damn entertaining

It might, however, be a good game.

You remember way more than I do about the game. I remember I played it, and I liked it, and… there was a Syrene ship that Geoff didn’t mention, and… ja… that’s about it.

Well in SC2 they were all amazonian seductresses. May just be the puppets they used but the SC 3 blue Sinhead o’Connor staring blankly into your soul doesn’t work for me. And that damned occasional head tilt and creeper smile. Nightmare fuel.

Stardock games are not too bad, the owner likes to play himself and has a good team around him.

I have, however, lost interest in the learning curve of games like Galciv. Got GalCIV 2 and 1, but no further.

What made Star Control II GOOD? Was it the gameplay? Well, very annoying to fly mother ship at start of game, have to collect stuff, BUT once mother ship is upgraded and you have a few Alien allies….. Gameplay is AWESOME.

BUT why? To meet the weird VUX Admiral who collected aliens species in a weaird ass zoo, or the crazy Thradashh, a species that have nuked themselves to the stone age 19 times and just keep coming back, same warrior mentality. Awesome. Or the crazy little Pkunk and their weird relationship to the beautifully strange Yehat. Or the nice Crystal Guys (forget name, also big ships). Or who can forget the Syreen or the Spathi?

THOSE are the memories from Star Control II, not the concept or even the game play.

I have changed my mind, Stardock. Make a game, sounds interesting. But it is not Star Control.

The little bushidoish marsupial guys (cant remember their name) were also awesome.

No, the Chmmr were the big ship guys, with rotating little laser balls.

No the, just remembered, no looking up, the CHENJSU were the crystal chaps. They also formed the first alliance against the UR-QUAN.

Wait yes. The Chmmr were a fusion of the Chenjsu and the Mechanical Mmrmhrm. Damn that game had a ton of race variation.
