New PlayStation 4 to be announced before October says The Wall Street Journal

Though Sony’s not said a word, independent reports out of both Kotaku and Eurogamer confirm the existence of a newly remade PlayStation 4. As you may know, if you’ve been following the news, the new PlayStation – dubbed the PlayStation 4K – is said to contain a beefier GPU, enabling Sony’s wonder-console to output game content at that magical resolution.

A new source has thrown its hat in to the ring. The Wall Street Journal is the third major outlet to independently confirm the existence of an invigorated PlayStation 4 – which they say will be announced before the release of the PlayStation VR in October this year.

The new PlayStation will enable “higher-end gaming experiences,” which includes Virtual Reality – so it’s ostensibly going to have the PSVR’s external unit stuffed inside its shell. The PlayStation 4K, the WSJ says will boast “enhanced graphics and power,” if you’re willing to buy in to it. They seem to suggest that current owners won’t be given an upgrade path, but that games will work across both PlayStation 4 platforms.

“Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power,” it said. “Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog.”

The new model will be sold alongside the existing one, says the Wall street Journal – a move which is aimed at those willing to pay for better experiences, “to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience.”

It also helps position the existing PlayStation 4 as a more mainstream device, possibly helping push its pricing down, something that could help the existing PS4 capture the more casual audience.

Microsoft’s hinted at a similar upgrade path for its own console, with Xbox Head Phil Spencer saying:

“When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we’ve ever seen. You’ll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform.”

While I don’t think options are bad, it does seem like slap in the face for existing owners, who’d likely have to purchase a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One anew. I just don’t know if I’m ready to buy a brand new console again.

If there is merely a switch in every game that says do you want to play in 4K or in normal HD then I really don’t care. As long as some games don’t come out exclusively to the 4.5 then I don’t even see the problem.

All games on the new PS4 will work on the old one. But there will be performance issues.

Aah, Server crashes, the worlds’ way of punching you in the nuts, using a 20 pound hammer and the swinging arm of Arnold Schwarzenegger…Just enough to cause injury from your lower abdomen all the way through to the back of your skull, or at least cause a headache to that magnitude…

And when we asked our dear server admin where the backups were he pointed to 2015, indicating the last successful backup was around there somewhere

The best part, the absolute BEST part was that the people responsible for the pickle we found ourselves in was too busy taking long weekends, going to bed early and making holiday plans for easter to even have the decency to pop in just to ask how things were going. Four weeks we struggled and not once did I see any of their faces. I swore a lot these last couple of weeks. A lot

Oh man, I believe you! Had a similar situation a few months ago, deadlines everywhere, one misstep and you lose your foot kind of thing and help was nowhere to be found, almost as if, some lunatic with a flame thrower had charged through the building while my earphones were on, decimating every possible link for support, because, “I won’t be here during that time” run of the mill excuses… Vaporising blood, I tell you…

Welcome back , now tonight don’t get stuck in the pub and join us online 😛

But back to the topic at hand, I don’t see sony pushing full 4K in a small box under 10K this year, might be a graphics jump but 4K that would be something.

I’m not at all convinced that anyone can create a commercially viable 4k solution for the gaming market. The current 4k market on PC is reserved for the elite, never even mind the consoles, sure, nVidia’s GTX 970 is a good card, but it’s not a 4k card, next in line is the 980 and at 11k oddly, is also falls just short of the 30fps mark on mostly any detail level above blur, next in line is the most favoured card for “4k readiness” the 980 ti, which costs as much as all of our organs put together, modified for consumption and thrown back out in the street at a wopping 14,5k… 4k consoles are still a ways to go though…

For most of us here in SA 4K gaming is a major problem, unless you are willing to shell out R13,000 for a cheap 4K TV. This wont have any bearing on the people who own the current PS4 and even if Sony gives you a great offer to trade in for the new model you will still need a 4K monitor for it to be worth something. At this moment its just too damn expensive and at the end of the day (unless there is a great bundle) you will have to cough up close to 25k+ for that package.

That’s like saying “Volkswagen will release a new/revised version of their GTI after the announcement of their new Polo”, the time frame being as vague as 6 months and dumping this straight into speculation territory, still makes me think it’s a bunch of bullocks, a bandwagon of misinformed horse CENSORED

Sony’s VR offering is considered “low end” compared to Vive and Oculus & this will enable a more high end VR experience. For the non VR players this will probably bring upscaled 4k for gaming?

In every new age console’s life cycle there is a revision to manufacturing. This should not be anything new to this generation as we have been stuck on 28nm for GPU’s for the past few years until now. The Xbox One & PS4 came out in late 2013 and only the past few months has there been mass production of 14/16nm chips. Since the VR system requires the extra computing power I think we should see the VR version as an upgrade this time around with a more resolution option when starting games either in VR or out of VR in the new model.
