Mobile gaming to overtake PC market share

Candy crush delicious

I remember there was a time when I refused to spend money on mobile gaming. I figured it wasn’t “real” gaming and I wasn’t going to pay money for it. I still refuse to pay for any micro transactions ever, but I’ve paid for a few games – Threes and Kingdom Rush immediately come to mind – and they were well worth it for the hours of enjoyment I got out of them. I’m obviously not the only one; mobile gaming has show incredible growth over the years, and this year it’s poised to pass a major milestone.

Research firm Newzoo often reports on the global games market and this year the numbers are staggering. The entire games market is forecast to reach $99.6 billion this year – that’s just shy of $100 billion! I wonder if that means gaming will stop being seen as a niche interest. Even more interesting is the distribution of that revenue. With mobile gaming expected to grow 21.3%, it’s expected to bring in $36.9 billion, which is a larger share than PC gaming.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of gaming revenue growth comes from the Asia-Pacific market, with China looking to overtake the US market this year as well. So Chinese gaming and mobile gaming are going to come out on top soon. The face of what we think of when we think of gamers and gaming is definitely changing, and I’m curious to see how the industry responds.

If Newzoo is right and gaming changes as predicted by 2019, I wonder if we can finally stop talking about console gamers vs PC gamers – we will all need to band together against the new master race: the mobile gamers. Plus, with a global games market expected to hit $118.6 billion by then, gaming will definitely be a mainstream interest, even more than movies or music.

Meh. There’s a reason mobile gaming starts with “mob”. I’m quite safe in my ivory tower.

On the other hand the handheld gamers are the 1% of the gaming world so it must be all their fault.

So, last weekend I finally tried Fallout Shelter on my phone.
It was good, but honestly I don’t see the appeal of mobile gaming. Haven’t played it again. I don’t get the point of mobile gaming.

Yea man. I’ve put my ebooks and ecomics on my tablet now (which is a really old tablet), now if I go away I’ve got all that with me. I’m not THAT jittery that I have to game wherever I go. I’ve got my study and my comfy spot in my house for that.

Because everybody has a phone but not everybody has a console or gaming rig. Of course it will be market leader sooner or later

      Yea. It makes sense.
You also really can’t put a picture matching game under the same roof as The Witcher 3. So all in all, this means little or near nothing in the larger scheme of things.

What ive noticed with the mobile games ive tried is that they all somehow based on an extremely similar skeletal system. Like it starts with an intro cutscene type thing, then you do like 5 missions which are technically tutorials where when completed you get free gems etc after that you do mission upon mission. Never walking around anywhere. You choose on a map locations and it starts into an immediate battle. When you win you get scored on a 3 star system (usually) anyway the games are also information overload. Too many options and upgrades to weapons where you can upgrade upgrades lol but this is all done so you indirectly forced to spend real cash to further your characters. Anyway This post is way too long, but most of the rpg type games or adventure games works in the almost exact same way. Its all bland. Some has fancy graphics I must admit. Specifically Chromatic Souls. The first and only mobile game I actually enjoy that doesnt force you to buy anything with real money cause you get rewarded often so you never really need to use money.
