Meet Kled, the Cantankerous Cavalier

Why does League of Legends continue to be the most popular MOBA around? Well, one reason is certainly that their release rate of new Champions is frequent (cough, Pit Lord, cough). Riot Games have unveiled their latest addition to the Summoner’s Rift, Kled. The Lizard riding, rodent-monkey hybrid brings an interesting twist to the current competitive nature of League of Legends, and his lore, as with all other Champions, is fantastic:

“Noxian soldiers say a lot of things about the murderous yordle known as Kled. They claim he’s fought in every campaign ever waged by the Noxian legions, acquired every possible military title, and has never once backed down from a fight. These claims, like all stories about folk heroes, are dubious. But one part of Kled’s legend is undeniable: when he rides into battle on Skaarl (his cowardly steed), the Cantankerous Cavalier fights ferociously to protect what’s his… and to take whatever he can get.”

Somewhat similar, but different entirely, to Dota 2’s Disruport (who rides a dinosaur), Kled seems like an interesting addition to League of Legends, following a rich lore of the Noxian Empire, the largest in the world of League of Legends. But what does Kled do? Let’s find out.

Abilities

The great thing about Kled is that his trusty steed, Skaarl, adds to his abilities as well. He’s not only a cowardly companion, but also packs a punch.

Passive: Skaarl the Cowardly Lizard

Skaarl has his own health bar and takes damage in place of Kled in the midst of battle when mounted. When health is gained by runes, items, companions, or masteries, Skaarl receives health too. The Coward in Skaarl will flee when his health bar is depleted, leaving Kled to fight alone. However, Kled being the Cantankerous Cavalier he is gains a new set of abilities when abandoned by his (un)trusty steed, gaining movement speed when entering battle. Kled can eventually restore Skaarl’s courage and bring him back into battle by attacking enemies, towers, and epic monsters.

Q (When mounted): Beartrap on a rope

This spell is all but explained in it’s title. Kled throws a beartrap tied to a piece of rope. Simple as that. However, the trap deals damage as it passed through enemies attaching itself to the first champion it touches. If Kled stays within range, he will pull the enemy in, slowing them, and dealing damage.

Q (When dismounted): Pocket Pistol

Again, an extremely simple ability. Once your coward of a companion abandons you, all you have to defend yourself is a measly Pocket Pistol. Since you don’t have the shared courage of your steed, the pistol will fire a “wad” of bullets knocking you back, making for a defensive stance until you’ve reinstalled courage in your companion.

W: Violent Tendencies (Mounted Only)

It’s clear that Kled is a bit of a renegade, and his third ability makes that perfectly clear. Violent Tendencies is a passive ability which sends Kled into a frenzy making his next four basic attacks faster with increased attack speed. On the fourth attack Kled will deal bonus damage based on the targets health. Despite being in a frenzy, Kled would need to be in the thick of things as the attack is melee.

E (Mounted): Jousting

What’s a Cavalier without a good ol’ joust? While mounted, Kled somehow convinces his coward companion to dash to a targeted area, dealing damage and gaining a movement speed bonus. If you successful joust an opponent, or epic monster, Kled can quickly dash out, making the risk worth the reward. With the second addition to the ability it’s no wonder why Skaarl would be up for this sort of engagement. The added bonus is that this dash back again deals damage to the target.

R (Mounted): CHAAAAAAAARGE!!!

Rallying his allies, Kled and Skaarl charge to a target location, building up a shield and boosting the movement speed of their allies. Unsure of this rambunctious charge, Skaarl will head for the closest enemy, dealing damage based on a percentage of their health. This ultimate ability sounds like a fantastic, and exciting, initiation for a team fight. I must add that this ability looks absolutely incredible.

That’s it for Kled, the Cantankerous Cavalier, and his cowardly companion, Skaarl. Be sure to keep an eye on any, and all, League of Legends streams in the forthcoming weeks as I’m sure he will be a main feature as players continue to experiment and charge into battle.
