Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer helped shape Mass Effect Andromeda

Andromeda-(1)

Say what you like about Mass Effect 3’s original colour co-ordinated ending scheme, but that game did not drop the ball when it came to multiplayer. Sticking players together instead of at odds with one another, that multiplayer option was a tense game of escalation that kept the action going for many, many hours after the end credits had rolled on the main campaign.

It’s an aspect of Mass Effect 3 that I fondly remember when I’m not huddled in a shower and crying about losing Tali, a more dynamic quick-slice of action that leveraged the best of the franchise into an enjoyable after-hours activity. And that feature hasn’t been forgotten as Mass Effect Andromeda has begun fine-tuning its development. In fact, it’s a key factor in the design influences of the latest game.

“I think the first thing everyone will notice is how dynamic it is, ”Mass Effect Andromeda producer Fabrice Condominas said to Game Informer.

Andromeda-(3)

Everything is more fluid, dynamic and fast-paced. The controls are also more responsive and obviously there’s a lot of inspiration from Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. I think there was a sheer pleasure when you played the multiplayer, pure fun in some of the layouts that were done, less predictable. And we wanted to capture, including in the single-player experience.

And we did that with a number of mechanics. The most obvious one will right away, be the jump. It’s not a permanent rocket that you can fly around with, there’s a beginning and an end to it. There’s really a curve, a momentum curve that is based on when you do your input. Yes you can hover, so for example when you jump it gives you time to see the combat layout and even shoot at enemies.

Also with progression, those things change and evolve. You can jump further, hover longer etcetera.

And from multiplayer we also took the idea that enemies and creatures can spawn in different places on the layout, not necessarily facing you. The idea is to keep constantly the momentum, and you keep moving. When you stop moving, that’s for a very specific reason, you need to recharge shields, heal or there’s just too many people and you need to check on that flank.

Whatever it is, it’s a very specific reason and we even pushed by adding some destructible aspects in the environment.

I’m down like a clown for that direction. The action in the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer always had teams on edge, as players had to juggle numerous factors into consideration as they fought to survive. For a game that carries that theme proudly into uncharted territories, it sounds like a wise design decision. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go cry some more over my loss of Tali.

ME3’s MP was the best I’ve played. So many hours of fun! And OvG screaming at the moon. Ahhh, memories.

I got a month free xbox live with my ME3, but the only internet I had was my dad’s 3G dongle. So I had to sneak a match or two in when no one was home. Was crazy fun though.

Too bad it did not feature cross play cause those types of games would not have had issues like CoD or BF would.

You can always just buy a cheap copy off Origin and join me. 😛

In hindsight, I realise why i never jammed it. I played it on XB360. I never had internet connection and I never did XB Live.

It’s only since my conversion to PS4 that I jam online.

Well, none of the stuff he listed is what made ME3s multiplayer fun.
He described CoD, not Mass Effect.

The multiplayers crowning jewel was that it let you play as other races, other builds, stuff that wasnt available to you in as Shepard.
It made you feel like a part of the universe.

Yet, they skipped that part and are stuck as humans again.
Dragon age origins, you could choose your race and it affected so much throughout the game.
Dragon age inquisition, you could choose your race, although it didnt really make that much of a difference.

They had the opportunity to give us that option, Shepard is gone, the races united against a common foe, a new universe and a new point of view to explore.
But they stuck us as humans again…

Two very different games thematically. Dragon Age: Origin’s theme was about beating the odds against a long forgotten enemy by overcoming the shortcomings of your race/faction. Mass Effect had a much deeper theme about Humanities place amongst the stars.

Hell witcher is closer to ME than DA.

Overall theme sure, but there were ALOT of overlaying themes.

But yes, Mass Effect was more about humanity than anything else, which allowed for a much more focused game. the content was richer.
Dragon age inquisition, with so many options for race and stuff, did feel a bit watered down and generic.

Maybe playing as other races belongs in the MP rather.
Although I still cant help but wish that my Shepard could have been an asari justicar like the MP.

I liked the magic system in Origins. It had awesome depth, the the different spells could be combined to provide totally different effects.
As someone who ALWAYS plays with a caster/wizard character in games, it was brilliant.

Hopefully multiplayer doesn’t take it over and the actual single player storyline is the main focus. No one but console people really want to play multiplayer that much. That’s what games like csgo are for. I’m not against multiplayer I just have no use for it, and when I gave sacrifices single player time and I am stuck paying $60 for a game that has a 10-hour storyline and that is it, that becomes annoying very quickly.
