HAN SOLO spin-off movie to ‘break the rules’

Han Solo has never been one to follow the rules, and it seems like Disney and LucasFilm is looking to take that spirit forward in the character’s spin-off movie which is to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. At least, this is according to the film’s cinematographer Bradford Young (Arrival) who claims that Lucasfilm is giving the directors a surprising amount of freedom, given that the movie is part of a large, popular (putting it mildly) and established franchise.

We already know that Lord and Miller are adept at taking seemingly bad ideas and turning them into good movies (see: The Lego Movie, 21 & 22 Jump Street, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs), so given the opportunity to work with what is already a good character and story, should hopefully make it come out even better.

The Han Solo movie has now secured its leads with Aldren Ehrenreich playing the titular character and Donald Glover playing the role of Lando, which should make for an exciting match up even if some die-hard fans can see no one else other than Harrison Ford take on the role of Solo.

Young shared this news in an interview with Collider recently:

We’re doing our own thing, that’s why we’re there. Phil and Chris are there to bring what they bring to their films, their very unique vision, their perspective on story and they asked me to come bring what I bring, and so just for that it won’t feel like any of the other films. And nobody at Lucasfilm is asking us to betray that, they’re saying ‘We’re in full support of what you do and we wanna make sure that we’re able to help you do it in the best way.’

It’s gonna feel like a ‘Star Wars’ film, but we’re definitely gonna break some rules, and we’re encouraged to do that. Visually, narratively that’s a good mandate. They really are about, from what I’ve seen so far, supporting up and coming artists, artists who have a strong vision and voice and perspective, and they really wanna permeate the films with those kinds of voices. So it’s interesting, very interesting. Not what I thought it would be, that’s for sure. I’m pleasantly encouraged and pleasantly surprised.

With a lot of rumours of reshoots on Rogue One, hopefully Lord and Miller’s vision for the film can indeed be kept intact. Warner Bros has shown what studio meddling can do to a movie with Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman, so we wouldn’t want to see it here.

Though to be fair, Lucasfilm parent company Disney have never been ones to do this. The directors have already proven that they think out of the box in their previous movies, so we can definitely expect something a little different here. Provided they don’t change the characters too drastically that it breaks the cannon though, I’ll be happy.

While I as much as anyone want to see a great Star Wars movie, I want to see a great movie first and foremost and if it means giving the directors that they’ve entrusted with the film more creative license to do their own thing, then that works for me.

What do you think? Would you like to see a Han Solo movie that is perhaps a little different or should all Star Warsmovies feel the same?

I’m going to say this unequivocally three times so there is no misunderstanding about my feelings on this one.

They say this now but will much of it need to be re-shot like with Rogue One?
