Final Fantasy VII teams up with… Capitalism?

No one smiles during monopoly

Final Fantasy VII is a beloved installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. I think it’s because for many people it was their first ever experience with Final Fantasy. While it’s a great one, I still adored II, VI, and even XII, but there is certainly a cult following around FFVII. And now it’s going to be used to skin everyone’s favourite board game… Monopoly?

This feels like such a weird choice, and according to the press release sent to VG247, “Whether your plans are to buy housing for the people or build a Mako reactor plant, you’ll soon discover the real nature of Sephiroth’s evil is the extortionate amount of rent he charges,”…. Um, okay. This just seems weird to me, and the product page doesn’t help:

Delve into the evolving city of Midgar in search of the latest business opportunities. Perhaps you’ll buy up a string of plots for housing development for the people, or go industrial and build a Mako reactor plant.

Trade with fellow players to secure key location and facilities and watch as savvy buyers secure a big pay day. A roll of a dice and a shrewd business mind will pave your way to success…Just watch out in case Shin-ra bring your empire crashing down!

Of all the games to resin, they pick Monopoly? What about Ticket to Ride, or Settlers of Catan? Or, if we want to stick with the classic board games people know and love, what about a weird version of Clue using the characters from FFVII and the locations from around Midgar? Monopoly just feels weird to me, but maybe because I’m not a huge fan of the game – sure, it’s fun as a kid, until you realize that the way it crushes your friendships and familial relationships is totally on purpose because that’s the truth about Capitalism. Also, I haven’t won a game of Monopoly since I was about 4 years old and I think my parents let me win.

If you go to jail do you die and is casting a phoenix down the only way to revive by rolling double numbers?

My wife and I play Settlers of Catan and a few other board games sometimes.

We play them BECAUSE they are board games and not electronic. We sit around a dining room table and play with friends, sociably.

Never been sure about these “board game” to computer game conversions. One exception Trivial Pursuit. I can play it, by myself, for fun. I enjoy that sometimes and wife and friends do not enjoy that game. So, I suppose, other people feel the same about monopoly and Settlers and all that.

Can we not just do all things my way, please?

Who gets the feeling they are going to milk fans with the actual game too?
