The Emerald Nightmare Mythic race begins today

There’s a side to World of Warcraft that a lot of people are oblivious to, and that is the Mythic race which ensues after the release of every raid instance. What this means is that some of the world’s top guilds race to see who can complete the raid instance, on the highest difficulty, first. They’re also paid to play, and paid to do this. This may sound incredibly nerdy, and strange, but it’s actually a huge achievement for anyone. Even completing Mythic is a massive achievement since it’s pretty difficult.

Guilds had a week of Heroic raiding, and Mythic+ Dungeons, to prepare for the Mythic progress, and today all news goes dark as the race begins. Since nobody here probably pays enough attention to the progress in WoW, I thought I’d let you in on the process these guilds go through in order to chase the “World First” kill on Mythic difficulty.

The preparation phase

Since the moment these guilds hit level 110 they begin their grind to get gear, and ready themselves for the raid. They often level several characters (of the same class and specialization) in order to gear share, which will be explained later. This means that each member of the guild has roughly four characters, and they spend the first month gearing them up through Dungeons and World Quests.

When the Heroic raid opened last week, these top guilds ran the raid nearly every single day with a method called “gear sharing.” What this means is certain guild members would come on their main characters, while the rest were on their alternate characters, and all gear would be funneled to those on their main. They would then rinse and repeat until every single member of the guild was funneled gear on their main character. In their downtime they would boost their fans through Mythic+ Dungeons ensuring they received at least two to three pieces of high level gear in order to prepare for the Mythic race.

Who will win the race?

There are a number of top guilds out there, and one name has always held the top rankings – Method. However, while Method have achieved a number of world first clears, a new guild is on the horizon. European guild Serenity is my top pick to take world first, but it’s going to be a tough ask as a number of new guilds are up and coming.

In Warlords of Draenor it was Paragon who got the world first on Imperator Mar’gok, and Method who took the two subsequent bosses (Blackhand and Archimonde) for the last two raid instances of the expansion.

These videos usually come out after the first five guilds have cleared the instance in Mythic, as to not give away any strategies for other guilds to use.

The final boss of the Emerald Nightmare is Xavius, and he’s one mean mother-trucker. The lore behind the raid is also extremely interesting, but that’s a story for another day. For now, however, we can sit and wait to see who will win the Mythic race to world first.

Blizz should really make a stream raid race for this on twitch with commentators. I would watch that all day

It’s far too competitive to stream it. Guilds dont want to give away their strategies and such when clearing Mythic. A lot will begin streaming their farming runs once roughly five guilds have cleared it.
