Dust-514

There’s a lot more to the Eve Online universe than spaceships and a ton of maths. There’s also a an action-heavy side to the franchise, a proper shooter with massive maps and plenty of guns. Three years ago, CCP Games launched Dust 514, a PlayStation 3 exclusive shooter that they’ve regularly patched and updated.

And this year, they’re killing it off. Originally scheduled to receive a new 1.3 update, Dust 514 will now have its servers shut down on May 30 instead. If you’ve been stockpiling your Aurum, now’s the time to start YOLOing it at the in-game marketplace.

“We are very proud of what we’ve learned and accomplished with Dust 514 on PlayStation 3 over the past three years and it is an honour to be a part of such a dedicated community,” CCP said in a statement.

We consider Dust 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Dust 514 will be shutting down.

That’s not to say that there isn’t still a market for CCP’s particular brand of shooting. According to the statement, their Shanghai team is still working on a PC prototype that goes by the name of Project Legion that was shown back in 2014.

“Their experience is being utilized to build a new game from scratch using Unreal Engine 4 while harnessing all our learnings from Dust 514,” CCP explained.

This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game.

This new project is still in an early phase of production, and we feel like we’re on the right track and plan to give an update at Eve Fanfest on April 21st as a part of the free livestream of the event. Since this new game will be different from Dust 514 (although keeping many of its great parts), we will provide tiered recognition rewards to our loyal Dust customers; details to be announced.”

I still remember jamming some Dust 514 a couple years back. Competent, easy to pick up and alright. Words that fans who have sunk many dollars into making their character the bestest on those servers don’t want to hear when they’re facing an extinction event in three months.

Unfortunately it was very one-dimensional, quickly grew tired of it.

Everyone shouted, it is STUPID to make it PS3 exclusive and everyone said it wont be successful but CCP could not see past Sony’s stupid money…

I hope CCP started to listen to their players
