DOOM will have an unlocked framerate on PC at launch

DOOM player progression

The DOOM open beta has been extended a full 24 hours to give you a last chance to get in on some demonic multiplayer action before the game launches next month, and there’re unsurprisingly mixed options about it. Some don’t think it’s traditional DOOM, while others love the modernization on classic arena gameplay. One thing everyone (on PC at least) can agree on is that the game’s framerate cap isn’t acceptable.

But thankfully it’s only an issue with the beta. DOOM will have an unlocked framerate on PC by the time it rolls around next month, supporting the increasingly popular 144Hz refresh rates amongst competitive shooter fans. The issue with the beta seems to have been caused by a limitation of the idTech engine powering the game, but iD Lead Renderer Programmer Tiago Sousa confirmed that the team had overcome it.

Master Race quip aside, this is good news for anyone planning on playing DOOM on PC, and an even bigger step forward for those hoping that it’s multiplayer will feature heavily in the competitive scene.

That’s if the game manages to overcome the overwhelmingly negative feedback it has received over the weekend. Many don’t believe the game rekindles what made titles like Quake, Unreal Tournament and the original DOOM multiplayer so engaging, even if the only real modernization is starting loadouts. It’s also incredibly close to launch so there’s nothing radical that iD Software can change now, but it will be interesting to see how the incorporate player feedback from here on out.

DOOM is out on PC, Xbox One and PS4 next month.

I could go for a Wimpy chicken, bacon & cheese baguette. Spur can GITS though.

            Have you had Burger Bistro?

Only problem is that BB is only in Pretoria. Hudsons is mainly Cape Town, but they have a Parkhurst branch for you northern folk.

Spur may own a stake in Rocomamas but they retained all the rites to the recipes and layouts of each restaurant. I can say however that the new ones don’t taste as good as the first 4 that opened.

            April 18, 2016 at 11:56

            Which?

I’ve been to the Kyalami and Kolonnade ones, and both are mediocre (beats the pants off Spur still, however, ANYTHING beats Spur burgers)

            April 18, 2016 at 11:59

Sandton Fourways and Randburg and my personal fave route, Peter Road (cause I don’t know the area name). I drove past the Kyalami one the other day and almost stopped for lunch but I was busy breaking phone systems.

Edit: First three were the originals.

Performance was shoddy as heck. Forgoing that it can’t run SLI at all without crashing at the main menu I saw graphic FPS spikes from 20-30s all the way down to 1 – 2… While standing still!

I really hope they resolve their performance issues before launch. I’m tired of games being unoptomised at launch. I really am .

Was considering but there’s no point. The game was made as the game was made. As it is, it’s not a bad game at all. It just doesn’t feel very “doomy” to me. But the gameplay was fairly solid. If somewhat stuttery for me 😛

You know it’s a console port when unlocked framerate is news for the PC version. Oh and added DRM.

    Don’t Support DRM.

Quick question: What is the difference between 60hertz and 144hertz? I mean I know its the refresh rate etc, but can you actually see a big difference? I havent tried 144hertz yet so just curious. Also why is an unlocked frame rate such a big deal?

I kinda get its a smoother experience. I just thought there might be more to it cause I played once on a 120hertz monitor and didnt see or feel a huge difference.

The difference is input latency, if you play a game at 120 fps at a 120hz your imput latency will be half of what 60hz and fps is.

ie. when you move you mouse or press a key the actions takes half the time to process. All the sudden your mouse feel more responsive and thus “lighter”.

If you have a 120hz monitor or 144hz then after 2 days of using the monitor 60fps will look as laggy as 30 fps to you.

Ive never really seen that sort of latency yet. I still need to use a 144hz monitor for a bit. I know that latency can be a killer. I see that often with online gaming.

Very true if you are use to 60fps you would have adapted your coordination and visual processing so that it looks and feels normal. I

If you are use to 60fps go and play a game at 30fps on a new console and you start noticing what I’m talking about.

Then once you get used to 144hz and go back you all the sudden you ask yourself how you managed to play like that.

Thanks for the awesome reply. Ill look into a 144hz monitor for my current Gaming/Multimedia/work PC.

      itrefreshesfasterthanyoureyescancomprehendsowhenyouplacethatoneperfectshotitjusthelpssomuchmore… I think…

Quite honestly though, the higher refresh rate is more aimed at the top tier pro gamers, and people with Max Payne like reflexes…

LOL I kinda get that but I dont see how much smoother game can get. I played a bit on 120hertz and didnt feel that it was a huge difference at all.

Yeah man, I feel the same way, as far as I can tell a huge part of it has to do with screen tearing, so instead of having these beautifully broken half images on the screen, you end up with completely/more completely rendered images per refresh…

Not that I care about that, unles I’m playing Quantum is broken on Windows Platform…

Sure that I totally get that as well, BUT with the low ms rated monitors now and with the new tech like GSync and FreeSync, doesnt the higher refresh rates defeat the purpose of these features? Only way I can see these 144hertz refresh rates being viable is for VR which I dont even think is needed if you have GSync. Then again… What do i know lol I dont have any of these features lol

HAHAHA!!! That last bit pretty much sums it up for me too!

The problem being that if you have a +-10ms in your games’ update speed, be that a LAN connection or otherwise online connection, everything that amounted to you buying a million and onety PC rig will help you about as much as a carpenter replacing his hammer with a fish, it’ll be futile…

            April 18, 2016 at 13:21

ok ±10ms is a bit bad. Screen tearing can be quite bad in that department. Then again depending on the type of games you play. I know Racing games experience screen tearing quite bad compared to say… Civilisation V, but yeah I do agree with you. Maybe one day Ill understand why those monitors costs so much more than even a 75hertz one lol
