The Division shatters Ubisoft sales records on launch day

The Division breaks sales records

The Division actually managed to make it out of the door earlier this week, after many, lengthy delays made it seems like a lost prospect over the last couple of years. The third-person shooter MMO is actually pretty great so far, and I’m enjoying my time looting the hell out of mission bosses, taking up bounty hunts and generally trying not to be an ass to the other friendly New Yorkers (one of those is a lie). Turns out millions of others are too, making The Division a sales success for Ubisoft already.

Ubisoft are used to massive launches for new IPs, with two of the previous top three in the industry belonging to Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed. Destiny was the last to join that list, but it’s now being kicked down a peg by a game that is remarkably similar. The Division, according to Ubisoft, is now their biggest opening for a new IP in their history – surpassing the massive 4 million first week sales that Watch Dogs previously broke the record with.

This means that three of the top four best selling IPs in their first week belong to Ubisoft, which is pretty impressive considering all the other publishers in play. The Division also managed to make a mark in the digital space, breaking the record for the most single-days sales for a full priced game across not one, but all three launch platforms.

Suffice to say millions of people really wanted to jump in on The Division as soon as it went live, which is why things like doorway grieving happened so frequently in the cramped opening safe houses. We’re still working our way through New York as part of our review (and streaming some as we go), but so far there’s a lot more to like than loathe in Ubisoft’s latest venture.

  1. I’ll continue streaming (though it gave heavy issues yesterday) tonight… 22+ hours in and on level 21. Loving the SP/Co-op missions. I spent about 10 min in the dark zone and gained 5 lvls, then left and carried on my mission spree.

Only 50% complete with the main story too.

HAHAHAHA! But Barry and FJ are online at the moment… probably busy with 2nd characters or something.

I’ll probably start another character at some stage… SOME stage…

This. 2nd characters are always a bad idea, coz eventually you end up playing them more as your friends aren’t online and it becomes your main. And then you hate having to play your other character with your friends.

Speaking from experience in WoW 😀

True, but I have every class in WoW maxed at the moment. So my challenge for Legion is to pick only ONE character as my main and stick with it xD

I’m 3 years clean now. Feels good, but I still lose my mind over new announcements and trailers etc. That universe is just too awesome. Can’t wait for the movie!

I play the first year of an expansion and usually take a break when the 2nd year content drought hits.

30 at the moment… just check the max level as per the areas.

That is great news! Good to see that new IP’s can still attract buyers. Hope the other publishers and developers take note and try new things as well. We aren’t sheep, yes I will buy Fifa every year but I also want new games as well.
Awesome records that they now have…

3012, while it sounds high, is damn impressive. Well played to get that.

I got 50 000 for a track on forza 5 once….. Out of millions. Pure luck. Cannot even can come close again.

I really wish EA would still offer team updates to at least the last TWO iterations of the game. I own 2015 and the teams are all out of sync. Super frustrating. I don’t think we should have to buy a new game EVERY YEAR just to keep the teams up to date. It’s not like that data is baked into the game anyway. It’s all downloaded from their servers / an API somewhere.

I understand they want to give people a reason to buy it each year but I feel this is a bit unreasonable. 2 years is fine in my opinion.

In my opinion Fifa can be bought as a standard game and then every year updated with a 10gig patch that we pay R300 – R500 for. They will make more money and the game will still evolve. They don’t need to release it every year at all!

I really, really would like to to play this.

But the time it would take from me to play this is just not available. This is the first game of its type that seems to really, really grab my attention. Sort of like BorderLands 2 (Played it though solo). And I suck at these games.

But work, family, work, work and a bit more family. Some time for friends too, somewhere. Sigh.

I shall live vicariously through the stories I hear of the game and what you lot post.

The game rock, BUT it is not really new IP, there is so many comparisons with Destiny. That is also why this game was delayed, they took what was bad in Destiny and made it better and kept what was good. For me this is Destiny in a different world setting

Face it Morne, you have a bad case of of Destinitis…

Playing other games will help you not to see the evil Destiny Boogieman around every corner….
