The Division was the most popular game on YouTube in March

As much as we like to poke fun at it, there’s no denying the power of YouTube. It’s a platform with an astonishing reach, one which can actually add value to anyone looking to make an informed purchase or who are merely there to stream some video game content that allows them to live vicariously through actions of any particularly favourite streamer.

Whether that streamer is an aggravatingly loud player who loves any game (I looooooooooove Altered Beast, going to stream it it’s going to be the best and I looooooooooove me some Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5) or a mute broadcaster who is flirting dangerously close to violating a few terms and conditions, the choice is yours.

Naturally, new releases see peak streams on YouTube. March was a gangbusters month for the platform, who have just revealed that the most watched game of that month was (SURPRISE!) Ubisoft’s The Division. Here’s the full list, courtesy of Games Industry:

  • The Division
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Clash Royale
  • UFC 2
  • Dark Souls 3
  • Pokken Tournament
  • Stardew Valley
  • Minecraft: Story Mode
  • Subnautica
  • Disney Infinity 3.0

It’s actually surprising to see games such as Mortal Kombat X and Disney Infinity still have a rabid following, even a year after release. The Division had one hell of a debut. Released on March 8, Ubisoft says that their new IP broke a 24 hour sales record for the company and had earned over $330 million in revenue in just three days.

Not bad at all, for a game that I’m still busy playing. Listen, while you’re all here: Go spend your Phoenix Credits on the Liberator assault rifle. It’s magnificently powerful, and combined with the Vector 45, makes for a tag team of pure ballistic destruction. Anyway, good on The Division then. Expect it to maintain a strong grip in April, even with the likes of Uncharted 4 and Dark Souls III on the way.

  1. I suspect if the Dark Souls 3 release wasn’t staggered, these figures might be different. Everyone’s avoiding spoilers like the plague!
