Dead Rising 4 is dropping the timer system so that it can be fun for everyone

Dead Rising 4 (3)

Dead Rising has always been a peculiar series. It’s one of the games of the modern era that made dealing with the zombie apocalypse a more lucrative genre, spawning dozens of familiar titles where your only goal is to survive some extreme cannibalism and live to fight another day. At the same time, I always hated the sense of urgency that Dead Rising placed on the player, as a timer to destruction was consistently counting down to the end of days in all three of the numbered games.

To me, that was never fun because I’m a terrible excuse for a human being and I just want to spend hours upon hours murdering my way through hordes of hungry pixels. That bloodlust is going to be somewhat sated in Dead Rising 4, as the timer is finally being dropped from the main campaign. The reason why? So that everyone can actually enjoy the mayhem “and not have to worry about a timer. If you wanna go kill zombies, you can. If you want to follow the campaign, you can do that as well,” executive producer Bryce Cochrane said to GamesMaster via GR.

Dead Rising 4 (2)

For our main campaign we really felt we wanted people to explore our world, and be able to go everywhere they want to go. We don’t want them to feel like they’re under the gun, to find what they need to find, or get where they need to get.

Multiplayer will still allow you to rock out with your clock out of you so choose to do so, as Bryce explained that Capcom still loves the “the timer based system”. Although I’m just happy to have a zombie apocalypse to explore at my own pace, which usually involves finding a safe spot and hiding in the corner. Dead Rising 4 is looking like some absurd fun so far however. Frank West is back (I’VE COVERED WARS!), there’s a gory new dismemberment system and the walking dead count looks like it has been considerably increased.

And in the zombie apocalypse, it’s all about survival of the MacGuyverist.

  1. Hopefully they bring back the control scheme from the first game along with Frank.

NOW I wanna play this. That timer was also what irked me most about these games. I think I played for about 4 or 5 hours, got irritated that I was forced along a certain route in a seemingly open world game and then never went back to it.

Why did it irk you? The way Dead Rising 1 and 2 were structured, was that replaying the game dozens of times were rewarded. Hell, you could ignore the timer altogether and do what ever you wanted. Finding secret paths to get to places quickly, finding places where you could get good weapons, etc all had purpose and meaning. Now it doesn’t, you just running around a generic dark boring area mashing x. There is no tension in the gameplay, and it is just boring. Removing the timer only hurts the people who enjoyed the game. It gives nothing to people who just wanted to kill zombies freely, since that option has been in the games since day one.

Can we proofread articles. Is it so hard to get real journalism.

This isn’t a journalistic article to begin with. It’s clear this is just an opinion piece. Maybe we learn to differentiate the two before calling out grammar errors John.

I will eventually get this game, but it definitely won’t be a purchase for me straight out the gates! I hope the side stories of the other survivors that you help rescue will be good. The attraction for me though, was always the ludicrous boss fights! Always strange characters!

I don’t understand the author’s complaint. You say you want to just kill zombies for hours. And you could do that in previous games. The timer never prevented you from having fun, it just added structure to the game. Having no timer means you are still free to run around, but now there is no longer any tension in getting somewhere to do something. It’s just mashing x to kill zombies, and that type of gameplay is more braindead than the zombies themselves.

My brain is barely on life support then. While I can appreciate the whole timer system, I just hate having a constant sense of urgency in a game. Great stuff when handled properly, but a 24/7 just gets a bit too tense for me.
