Below, a delightful looking 2D rogue-like with some heavy Dark Souls inspirations, has been in development for a long time. Developers Capy (who have previously worked on Super Time Force and Sword and Sorcery) have shifted from one release window to the next, crushing dreams of a close launch date yet again. Except this time they’re not giving anyone a ballpark figure. Below, for the time being, is indefinitely delayed.
It shouldn’t sound as negative as it usually does though, as Capy details in a post regarding the delay. Below was scheduled to launch sometime in the American Summer, and given that it’s nearly up that’s simply not happening. They’re still working furiously on the game but understand the frustration the constant delays are bringing on their fans. So to ease it, they’re not going to be taking about a release window again until they’re absolutely sure of a date. Whenever that could be.
“We did a lot of soul searching. We knew we wanted to get it into your hands as soon as possible. We knew the game was there, and we’re super proud of it, but we also knew it needed more time to make sure it lives up to our studio’s standards, and the quality that you expect from our games. From the very beginning, BELOW has been our most ambitious undertaking, and we’re just not quite done excavating its depths, or polishing all of its facets.”
“Instead of giving you a new, loose release window, we will be going dark while we take the time that we need to complete BELOW without compromise. The next time you see a major BELOW update, that means our game has a firm release date, which we’ll share.”
That’s heart-breaking really, because of what I’ve seen of Below it certainly looks like an indie darling to get excited for. Capy make some truly great games (did you play Sword and Sorcery?), and some of the idea they have for their eerie rogue-like just make me wish I could sit down right now and play it. I’m hoping it’s soon, and at least appreciate the honest from Capy at this point. Will Below make it out before 2016? Hopefully.
