Dissidia Final Fantasy, you are looking good

Cloudy with a chance of Lightning

One of the best fighting games that I ever played was Final Fantasy’s Dissidia series on the PlayStation Portable. Three-dimensional to the max, Dissidia Final Fantasy may have had a loopy plot, but the game was pure fan service. Finally, you could have dream match-ups! Cloud vs Squall! Onion Knight vs Zidane! Lightning vs Tidus! Sephiroth vs Aerith’s chest!

If you’ve got a PSP, and you’ve never played it, you’ve done yourself a disservice. Anyway, Dissidia is making a comeback of sorts. The game will be hitting Japanese arcades soon enough, with development from Team Ninja. And it is looking fantastic so far, at least visually. Here’s a bunch of videos in the game, of various characters in action:

Warrior of Light

Firion

Onion Knight

Cecil Harvey

Bartz Klauser

Terra Branford

Cloud Strife

Squall Leonhart

Zidane Tribal

That gets my blood pumping. Dissidia Final Fantasy is the kind of fighting game where you have to genuinely think about how to use your character. Each of the original 11 heroes (And the villains!) from the very first game had their own set of quirks. Cloud was a melee master with heavy area of effect attacks in combat, while Zidane was a monkey-fast bastard. Tidus sucked blitzballs, because he’s the worst and nobody likes him and I’d rather have played the entirety of Final Fantasy X as Jecht instead.

I freakin’ hate you Tidus.

And yes, I know that this is an arcade game. For Japan. I’m not planning a trip to the land of the rising sun however, because I’m patient enough to know that Sony will eventually bring this to the PlayStation 4. They’ve pretty much confirmed it, way back in April already. And it’s going to be a hard year waiting for it. But I’m a patient bastard.

LoL. Do fighting games really need a plot? Other than there’s a tournament. Now let’s get the guys together so we can klap the naartjies out of each other!
