Gamescom has renewed my interest in the PS Vita again. My technolust is rising, thanks in part to the new Cross-Play feature and the slate of upcoming games arriving on the system. Thing is, the Vita isn’t cheap, and it isn’t going to be receiving a price cut any time soon, as Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida says that the standalone device will still cost you a pretty penny.

Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom, Yoshida says that the only discounts in store for the device, will be targeted more towards versions that come bundled with games. “Of course, cost reduction is one area our engineering team is working on. But we just launched the platform earlier this year. It takes time to do so,” Yoshida said.

At a certain point in the future we would like to address the pricing issue for some of the people who are waiting. But this year we are trying to add value by creating different types of bundles. We announced we will provide LittleBigPlanet PS Vita bundle pack. That’s affordable for people who are looking for a good deal.

Right now, the Vita will cost you roughly R3000 for a wi-fi model, and extra R500 at least for something that packs some 3G functionality. It’s a hefty price to pay, but if you’re going to get a few games and a decent memory card to go with it for that price, then all of a sudden, the cost ain’t that bad at the end of the day.
