Everything you’ll get in Mortal Kombat X’s expensive DLC

As a fighting game enthusiast (who’s not particularly good at fighting games), I’m deliriously excited for NetherRealm’s upcoming sequel, Mortal Kombat X. It’s got all the right ingredients to make it a truly exceptional fighting game. Taking all it learned from the successful Mortal Kombat 9 reboot, NetherRealm has iterated in grand fashion, adding 3 style variants per character, making MK as deep and technical a fighter as MK could possibly be. Yes, I’m excited. I’m also a little annoyed.

The big thing that’s making me twitch is, of course, the game’s DLC. Goro, the great big four-armed Shokan warrior is only available to those who pre-order – which is, I think, a bit shifty. It’s not the most egregious thing about the game’s impending DLC either. If there’s one thing I detest in fighting games, it’s hiding characters behind a paywall, and Mortal Kombat X does just that. The first bit of DLC The Kombat Pack, contains 4 playable characters, and a wealth of admittedly cool skins. Here’s what you’ll get in the pack:

The Ultimate Horror Pack:

  • Playable character Jason Voorhees
  • Horror skins Vampiress Mileena, Kraken Reptile and Pharaoh Ermac

The Klassic Pack #1:

  • Playable character Tanya
  • Klassic skins for Kano, Sonya and Liu Kang

The Predator / Prey Pack:

  • Playable character Predator
  • Predator-themed skins Commando Johnny, Infrared Scorpion and Carl Weathers as Jax

The Klassic Pack #2:

  • Playable character, Tremor
  • Klassic skins for Quan Chi, Jax and Kung Lao

The complete contents were outed by a Microsoft store listing, and they leaked the fact that Liu Kang will indeed be playable in the game – something NetherRealm hasn’t officially announced just yet. It’s a fair bit of content, and just the motion capture in bringing these characters to the game obviously costs a fair bit of money – but at half the price of the full game, it’s a bit of a slap in the face, if you ask me. Yes, The Kombat Pack is included in any of the game’s special editions, but if you’re getting the vanilla version of Mortal Kombat X, it’ll cost you $30 for the new characters and a couple of skins. That doesnt mean that the content has been cut out of the game to nickle-and-dime you, though – but I think that it’s a bit much at half the price of the base game.

Admittedly, this doesn’t really temper my excitement for the game, as much as it merely annoys me. What do you think? Is this fair DLC practice – or does it all come across as being a bit slimy? I have no problem with aesthetic DLC in games like this; if people want to part with their money for cosmetic changes, that’s okay. Separating your player-base in to haves-and-have-nots, especially in a fighting game, isn’t quite as cool. Thankfully, Mortal Kombat X will have unlockable characters and skins, which you’ll get for completing the game – like fighting games used to do.

Overpriced DLC is what you get because people will shit their pants at paying $100 for the base game & $10 for the DLC.

I’m really considering the pre-order just for Goro but I hate the idea of being forced into it just so I can get a character I would maybe use? Putting characters into DLC is not right but people will still buy it. I might even do it for the Jason and Predator ones.

I’ve thought about preorders a lot. Look you’re either gonna buy a game or not. Now people who’ve played MK as long as me will pick it up day one not because of the preorder bonus but because we love the franchise. It just feels as if they’re falling in line with the industry. Especially with the DLC now.

Even though I’m buying most of my games much later, when the DLC is discounted too, I’m being a lot more circumspect with that than I used to be. Before I used to just load the whole lot into the shopping cart & buy, but now I’m actually reading user reviews on the DLC too. Because either I’m getting jaded, or a lot of DLC is either not very good or just pointless.

I did that with Child of Light & South Park: Stick of Truth recently. Both games are brilliant but user reviews said the DLC was a waste of money.

Yeah currently playing Injustcie God’s Among Us Ultimate edition, picked it up for cheap and intend to do so with MKX

And I was actually planning to get it. Guess that cash will go towards Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the first sin since with that R100 off takealot can pick it up dirt cheap at R260, finally trying my hand at the game

Sorry but there will never be a komplete edition in the age of digital content. Because there is no cost incentive in remarketing and repackaging the same exact content. In the older systems dlc was limited by file size.
Not anymore. The only komplete edition now is the same game your buying today with the dlc as free.
Pay close attention to things like titanfall where after a year or more the dlc is given away for free. It basically doubles the size of the game and yet they never repackage a complete edition because it’s pointless spending money on it.
What will happen is DLC will be overpriced, then multiple character packs will be combined into a discount bundle. Then after two years or a year before mk 11 comes out it will all be free download content in order to resurge hype into the new game.
That’s what current games are doing. Not reprinting CDs with the marketing hype that changes nothinf but costs the company money.

So, what exactly do you consider a “komplete” edition, if it’s not the game plus all the dlc?

          • Samuel Sanchez

            March 26, 2015 at 08:19

You miss the point. Komplete edition on prior systems was an entirely different game you would go and buy because download content was limited. Now those updates to games are download content. There is no new komplete edition it’s the same game everyone who purchases the CDs on preorder get. When that download content gets bundles and sold or given away free it’s the same game.
If I buy my friend titanfall and he logs into his Xbox one and download the game e not only gets all the original release content he gets all three download packs for free. It’s not titanfall the komplete edition. It’s just titanfall. Your not saving money your just waiting for time. The same as buying a used game from GameStop after a game came out a year ago.
Personally I don’t buy most dlc for games. It eventually is given away or bundled and sold for a discount on Xbox live later. I preordered since I know I will play this game and have no intention of waiting 8 months to save $5-$10 dollars. I’d likely wait for the kombat pack until it goes on sale on gold or bundled later. Not a big deal I’m sure I’ll have plenty of content to do before then.

          • Samuel Sanchez

            April 12, 2015 at 13:31

Please re read what you wrote and realize you answered your own question. You never bought a complete edition Because they didn’t make a complete edition of the game. Instead you bought dead rising 3 and paid for the download content in one purchase. You just proved the point I was making. They don’t make complete editions anymore. You buy games and download content. Eventually that download content is discounted or free. But the person buying dead rising 3 now or a year later owns the exact same game as you. There is no seperate game called a complete edition. It’s one game.

Well it will be a first then. They did in for Mk9 and Injustice. Better yet. Both previous games came to PS+ anyway.

Neither of those game came to ps4 which no longer is limited by dlc. If you play close attention you will see how nearly every games are now expanded via dlc and no longer require a new disk.

Yes if the game has been out and people had time to finish playing the game and the developers creates new stories, items, levels, sounds, then yes make a DLC for the online world. Fuck the offline people. But that’s another story.

But when you need to pre-order the game for the pre-order DLC and buy the day 1 shit loads of DLC, just to get the complete game, which so many publishers and developers are doing, to turn that $60 into a $120 for shitty game that needs to be patched up everyday because of how broken the fucking game is because it’s been torn apart by all the DLC.

The bad far outweighs the good when it concerns DLC.

I don’t have an issue with non-MK characters being DLC. If you want them then pay for them, sure. But for old MK characters to be put out as DLC is kinda dick… At least they didn’t make Scorpion and Sub-zero DLC characters, that would break the fabric of time and cause chaos.

Now if they did MK following the Skylanders model… THAT I would buy and buy and buy… Oh good gravy that would be cool.

    I call bullshit.

“Not enough time”?? Then why not delay the game release date? ??

On the flip side, why delay a game when you can charge DLC prices for the shit you didn’t finish?

Oigh…. This is the same thing we hear with every game…. “We only really start working on DLC once we’ve finalised everything of the game, like proper play testing, we don’t want our customers to buy games that don’t work and then charge them for DLC that we worked on before we even had an idea of what the game in completion looked like, I mean, that’s just, absurd!” Yet the DLC content and rollout plan was laid out before work on the actual game started… It.Sickens.Me.

U do realise that your actually getting 12 characters as they all have 3 variation, so if you was getting 12 characters for another game how much do you think you would pay for the DLC and if you include goro that makes 15

Just remember, if you want to just get Predator you can buy him separately at a lower price.

For hardcore gamers that is. Won’t be getting the dlc because I am no hardcore. I’ll wait for the komplete edition instead.

$30 is not super expensive for a season pass! Everyone on the internet is bitching about how its way too expensive but its not at all! Nobody whined when CoD:AW charged $50 for one fucking pack!

Just gonna wait for the “komplete edition in a few months” probably gonna be a unbalanced mess at launch and probably gonna be forgotten and never updated again and remain a unbalanced boring mess with bad glitchy servers like mk9

This is the norm guys, I don’t know why it’s something to be up in arms about now… I think we all need to just accept it… this is the trend…

Step 1) Release hot game they know everyone will want

Step 2) Attach expensive DLC with juuuust enough lure to get at least 1/3 of everyone to buy the DLC (and potentially more just caving and buying it anyway)

    Step 3) MEGA PROFIT.

WWE 2k15 screwed us over with the additional DLC. I hope it’s not like WWE 2k15

I hope it is. If I hold off on MK X, I can buy it with the DLC for free in 5-6 months like WWE did.

You people bitching about dlc in games need to stop crying about it. Either get a job and stop depending on mommy to buy you shit and get it yourself, or just don’t buy it. It’s 2015, this is the new business model. It’s not going away. I personally don’t mind it because I have money and can afford whatever I feel like purchasing. I like extra kontent. Free or paid for.

Some people “bitching” are probably hard working, yet still strapped for cash. Some people have children or have to take care of other relatives financially, while sometimes covering other life expenses (car repairs, medical costs, divorce lawyers, …..).

A lot of people work hard as hell, yet still barely get by paycheck to paycheck. I was one of them. $30 for DLC isn’t quite chump change for everyone, on top of the $60 for the game separately.

Sorry guys, I got MK9 and got all the bangin DLC.Couldn’t have been happier. But I wont be buying MK10.

DLC kontent “not being ready by launch”
    Does NOT Equal
DLC kontent “Intentionally left out of game with intent to make money later”

The latter of which clearly happens with many games including this one these days. The latter should be treated exactly the same as Ripping content out of a game for DLC.
And to top it off Goro being a pre order only = Deal breaker right off the bat. Enjoy having your money taken from you, noobs.

The shyt is rip off. u already paying $60 bucks for a game and 30 dollars more almost a $100 for a game. I love mk but not that much to be spending $100 for a game. I hope their sell flop for being greedy.

MKX is a rip off. I have had to fork out $400 for the PS4 (yes the game motivated me to buy one); I had to buy the game, pay to play “online” and then pay for the extra characters every few months. About the time this whole thing plays out, I will be paying out between $700-$900 for a fucking video game. This is the LAST MK game I will buy. Too old for video games anyway.
