Not many people are still playing Evolve on PC

Evolve is a deep, tactical shooter that blends first person team-based play with third person player controlled boss fights. Those that love the game, absolutely adore it, while the rest of us sit wondering what exactly the fuss is all about. I know personally, that I’ve completely lost interest in the game. That’s expected though; I’m hardly a big fan of multiplayer shooters in the first place. What’s not quite as expected is just how much PC gamers seem to be abandoning the game.

In the most current statistics of the most-played games on Steam, 2K and Turtle Rock’s Evolve has dropped significantly, hovering around the 40th most played game on Steam. That’s not good for a multiplayer-focused game that’s barely a month old.

EvolveSteam

Games that more people are playing include the very old, very single player Fallout: New Vegas and the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. More people are playing ARMA 2 and Football manager 2014. Most embarrassingly, is the fact that more people are still playing Left 4 Dead 2, Turtle Rock’s last game. Of course, these number should start spiking with new content releases and inevitable Steam sales, but it’s just striking how few people seem to playing the game on PC. Of course, we have no indication of how many (or indeed, few) people are playing the game on consoles – but I suspect many are abandoning the game there as well.

Some think it’s due to the game’s DLC practices, but I think it’s something else. It’s quite a bit deeper a game than most realise, and I think games of this ilk appeal to a loyal, core audience who’ll play it for years. The rest of us will move on. I already have.

What of you? Are you still playing Evolve?

Dota, LOL and CS want to tell you that your statement is incorrect…

But think its because evolve is more like a MOBA than a FPS.

It’s not a true FPS where its kill or be killed but a slower process of building up to either winning or being defeated which fits more with MOBA play

it would probably have done better with a more MOBA-like pricing scheme where the base game is free and you could slowly grind or just buy additional monsters and hunters.

Dude you know you just compared a “AAA” priced game to F2P games right???

You do know that right? Evolve goes up to $100 depending on what edition you bought, with micro transactions. Where the others are free with micro transactions… Am I missing something here?

Dude, Bro… You do know that your original statement was about a game having a repetitive play style and how it will never last?

Yes the one has a price and horrible money making model, but the article was not about how many people bought it, but how many used to play it AFTER buying it…

Then again… you did says trade it in, but yet again, the article was about players on PC…

A full game = a single player campaign and maybe some multiplayer. In that multiplayer section you will find, free 4 all, team death match, king of the hill, search and destroy, co-op, you get the picture.

Evolve took like one game mode in the multiplayer section (4v1) and turned it into a full priced game.
That is why people are bored of Evolve already. It’s not a full game. That’s why Fallout New Vegas had more players than Evolve in that picture.

Evolve did not drop suddenly it’s been declining since launch day it’s lost about a thousand players per day since it launched it and only began to slow down when it hit 6000 to 8000 consecutive players at peak.that’s about 20,000 people who stopped playing within the first 3 weeks, and it is still losing players daily by the hundreds.

The game is a train wreck of bad design, bad marketing ,bad business practices basically it is the poster child of everything wrong with Triple A gaming.

it could be argued that it is so bad and such a failure that Bioware decided to cancel Shadow Realms after all the negative pre-launch press, and Fable Legends developer decided to go free to play after seeing the train wreck of negative publicity.

Take a look at the Steam user reviews for Evolve. They’re pretty harsh. Mostly about DLC, which isn’t really that fair I think. That’s a separate issue to how the core game plays.

I bought it for PC and am still playing it. I have had some really exciting games and I would say that I can see myself playing it for a good while longer. The only problem is sometimes it takes a while to get a match.

There is more to it than meets the eye and if you only play a few hours and leave you may be missing out on some really fun times. My handle is Gerrie, if any LazyGamer readers or Staff wanna mix it up.

If more people would buy the game and stop whining about DLC we could be having an awesome time together. The core game is solid although I will admit there needs to be more more variety in terms of match types & maps.

I did buy it with eBucks so technically I was not really concerned about value for money, my opinion may have been different had I paid actual money.

It’s embarrassing for Turtle Rock. They’ve got this great big, new, hyped game..and more people are still playing their old one.

Yeah good point but they would be silly to think it was ever going to reach the heights that Left 4 Dead has. But I guess a month in is pretty early for it to be behind lol

I haven’t played it but I heard someone comment on a podcast that they found it unbalanced i.e. playing as Monster pretty much always guaranteed success. Is that true to some extent – if the game is unbalanced then pretty much explains why people no longer play it.

I’ve played and I would say it feels balanced. You can easily lose as the Monster. A full team of tier 3 hunters playing right is definitely a huge challenge. In the same vein a fully Evolved monster is nothing to sniff at (pun intended).

As awesome as the game concept is… it gets tired… fast. Glad I didn’t buy it. Will wait for it to get released for free on PS+

Repetitive … that best describes it. Static classes with no depth, broken matchmaking when in parties. Running behind monsters gets tedious quick and running away as the monster gets tedious.

Boring game modes and DLC practices that borderlines pure fucking lunacy …

Its a very solid game and the gameplay is very solid and technically its a brilliant game. There are allot of rgeat moments and fun moments when you play. But it gets old really quick.

This game biggest enemy is lack of content and the fact that you basically have to pay another $25 to get a little more content in the future.

Greed killed this promising game …

I tried Civ III, IV and they were so behind Total War, it wasn’t even funny.
I don’t even know why their installs are so bloated…
Delta Force 4, 5, 6 (JOTR) played by millions, does not get a mention, because it’s no longer selling but had a better shooting engine & open large maps to the failed valve CS clones (CoD, BF2/3).

While that is true, a game whose core focus is multiplayer having issues with maintaining a large playerbase is still a problem.

Just admit that all good things come to an end, nothing lasts forever and plan for the next great playable game. Flat fees, no more MMOs.

Its normal for play to drop. I played it twice and day for a week. Now I’m playing it 3-3-4 times a week. Although this is a pretty significant drop, which is unfortunate, but I would need ro see data on other triple A games to see if the drop is average or not. But as long as I can find people to play with I don’t really care. And thankfully their DLC model doesn’t break up the community like Titanfall so it shouldn’t be a problem. We’ll likely see it rise again with new free and paid DLC.

I think it may get more popular in a few years if it can pick up more players after a few price drops. Steam players are very price sensitive.

Can’t say that I am, although to be honest, Evolve was never on my radar. It’s like when Honey Boo Boo was on TLC. I just couldn’t be bothered.

    *coughtitanfallcough*

Seriously though, does no one else see the recurring theme here? Both titanfall and evolve have suffered nearly the exact same problem because they’re high-end, high-concept multi-player shooters. Multiplayer games require broad appeal to be successful. Though I loved Titanfall, it lacked broad appeal in its theme, requirements, and lack of singleplayer, and Evolve is no different in any of these regards. So, what’s the lesson here? Can we have solely multiplayer-based games? Dota and CS say yes. But clearly the games need to have a broad enough appeal to draw a solid player base before they’re promoted as AAA titles. Dota and CS generated their respective fan pools over a 10 year stretch, with broad themes and accessible requirements (both technical and financial). I just won’t buy into a non-franchise AAA pure-multiplayer title being able to pull that off any time soon… unless it’s Star Citizen. 🙂

It’s the day one DLC that is the problem. If they would have lowered the price, maybe 70 with a digital deluxe including all monsters. Instead they got greedy wanted to nickle and dime the customers for everything. Now they went from 25k to 1,500 in less then a month.
