FFD-Art

Earlier this morning, we were talking about how DOOM was going to give its fans a choice of alternative covers. Covers which look a trillion times better than the current generic box art that copies of the game will be shipped out in. And that’s a lost art, it really is. With PC games having long ago shed their mortal physical form to be more of a digital offering, box art covers have been in decline ever since.

Pick any shooter game these days, and chances are that the cover for said game will feature a lone soldier strolling away from the chaos behind him, with the colours of teal and orange dominating. Art like that, is massively boring. And it shouldn’t be that way at all. This generation has given birth to numerous artists, digital painters who can crank out all manner of beauty on a tablet and use various programs to create visuals that you could never have imagined.

And that’s an influence born from an earlier age of gaming. An age where PC box art was big, bulky and in yo face boyeee. This was an era where demons ruled, blood wasn’t something to avoid and every cover looked like it belonged in the Louvre. So much so, that you probably bought a game or two based on the cover art alone.

So tell us, which games sold you with love at first sight? Which game covers were gorgeous, stunning masterpieces that set your eyeballs ablaze? Do you even have some of them? Let us know below.

Back when I still bought physical copies I judged a game by it’s cover. These days I judge a game by the quality of the streamers playing it on twitch 😛

Although to date, Baldur’s Gate cover art always made me interested in the game, and when I got the BG2 collector’s edition I was so chuffed

It’s not really something memorable for me, but I do notice it when it’s not particularly interesting. Makes me think how much do they really care if they couldn’t be bothered to put much effort into the packaging.

I do have this beauty though…

Not really since these days you get the down low on the game long before it is launched and in the early internet age games took so bloody long to get to SA you also knew if you wanted it or not long before seeing the box art.

If you bought a game long ago in a box that could fold open, you just knew it was going to be epic 😛

NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even back in the early 90s when the box art was all we had to go on. I looked for the Nintendo Seal of Quality and the screen grabs at the back. But back then only gamers played videogames. Now its new age kiddie casuals. That is why the female is always removed from the cover, the old school suits seem to think games are for pre-odalesant males, hence the Bioshock Infinite cover.

This DOOM cover shows a Halo type shooter for both genders. Playing it safe.

That’s the western audience for you. A lot of the covers need to up front and direct. Whether it be something flashy or the main dudebro on the cover, they hardly ever indulge in the abstract covers, or covers that’s supposed to mean something. Look at the Dark Souls Japanese cover, it perfectly sums up what the game feels like much more than the western one.

Since I buy nearly all my games digitally now it has changed a lot though, there aren’t really “covers” to judge them by anymore, you have so much info available from the get go.
That said, when I see an interesting looking picture of a “newly released” game pop up on Steam I will always click on it to investigate.
