FFD: What sorts of missions and in-game objectives should get in the sea?

I am hooked, hooked I say, on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Thanks to its structure, it means I can play one of the finest, open-ended games of this or any generation, and not have to sit through hour long cut-scenes of convoluted narrative twaddle. Most of the missions have been a blast to play, and I’m mixing them up to avoid repetition and boredom.

Some missions, you’ll find me sneaking around in the dark, like Batman, restarting so I can get a perfect sneaky run through, going for that addictively rewarding S Rank. Other times? I’ve gone in guns blazing, playing the game like a third person Call of Duty, and having a heck of a lot of fun doing it (while still managing to get a decent rank, because who knows with this game).

Still, there was one mission I did recently that I hated. Not because of what you had to do, or any restrictions on how you had to do it – but because it was timed. Let me tell you this; I hate timed missions. I hate a clock in the corner of my screen telling me, along with intermittent beeps and warnings, that I’m 5 minutes from failing. It does something to the inside of my brain that makes it impossible for me to think and act rationally, and very nearly inevitably leads to me failing said mission.

I get that they’re all about instilling some sense of urgency, but fail-states based on timers can, as far as I’m concerned, get in the sea. Those, and escort mission where the person you’re trying to save has the AI pathing of Leroy Jenkins, and negative HP are probably the two things that’ll get me to switch off a game, eject the dics (where applicable!), and dropkick it in right in to the sun.

What types of missions in games annoy you? Looking for shards? Collecting Elfroot? The whole of Dragon Age Inquisition?

Shards can get in the fucking sea.
The stuff you’re asked to fetch can get in the fucking sea.
The stuff you’re meant to kill x amount of can get in the fucking sea.
Stuff where you have to listen to boring story tropes for an hour can get in the fucking sea.
Quest hubs can get in the fucking sea.
Chests with essential items hidden in the furthest and most annoying to get to places that you’ll never go to normally or again can get in the fucking sea.
Defeating the same boss for weeks on end without getting that one piece of loot you need can get in the fucking sea.
The same daily quests every day for a month to get enough reputation can get in the fucking sea.

So basically, typical RPG and MMO shyte can get in the fucking sea.

Not to say I hate those genres. They just need something more interesting.

Guild wars 2 is tops in this, the NPC actually runs back to where the engage happens and then starts to walk/crawl from there.

GW2 is a lot milder though in some of its stuff at least. You’re not forced to quest to lvl, which is ok. Exploring and doing shit you like also works, which is a nice break. But it doesn’t hold my interest for too long, because beyond that there’s little to keep you coming back for more. No end game content isn’t the issue – no enjoyable content is.

Well that was kind of the charm. You rolled what you wanted, did what you wanted, and played how you wanted. But in the end, it gets old pretty fast. There’s no hook or pull keeping you there.

Mmmm this is a tough one. I’d say fetch quests, but sometimes those can be really cool if there’s a bit of story and it’s multipart with a few extras thrown in (Such as breaking in first and needing to put in effort other than “farming” the items required).

So perhaps the term would be vanilla fetch quests?

Quests or portions of a game that requires twitch reflexes for one portion of a games, where the other 99% of the game does not. WTF?

    Boring ones.

No mission type is boring if it’s well designed, they make an effort to gussy it up a bit & you get something out of it, like W3 did with its fetch quests & escort missions. And “escort” missions huehuhehue

And I hate missions that force me to stand around in one spot for ages – like soloing a defense mission in Warframe. It’s like sitting in traffic. A couple of minutes is fine, but I need to feel like I’m moving.

No, I got my smithing up in a very short space of time. “Cheated” with money, overloaded me with stuff and then chatted to the wife while my fingers on the controller followed a pattern. 10 minutes, if that long.

I don’t mind fetch quests, if they’re done right. If they’re interesting. You can only add so much variety in terms of quests anyway. But I’d say rather go for fewer, longer quests than 100 small quests.

I’m so damn tired of the whole “Batman now drives a tank” thing. What happened to the awesome streamline cars he always had in the comics and animated series? My favourite is still the car he had in the 90s animated series.

They had to test the car animations for Mad Max. WB is already using their character animations for Batman in every other game they make, might as well do it with the cars too.

          ah. Very clever wording.

So the mission was forced AND the inclusion of the bat-mobile in the game felt forced in general, like it was shoved in, without proper thought of how it fits in the eco system of the game.

SO, should I get Batman or not?

I don’t have a problem with a fetch quest, I have a problem with nothing happening inside said fetch quest, if fetch quests had a bit more narrative structure, where you could be guided or entertained on your way to waypoint B, C, D,E,F…. It would be much more fun, I ABHOR when a game puts a waypoint down and says, look for the leaf atached to the Zebras rear end using this…*hands me a gyrometer* What the hell are you supposed to do in a situation like that? Timed missions can be fun, that specific mission actually scored me an S rank… and yes, I blew up everyfuckingthing along the way….
