FFD: We’re taking the fun out of gaming

Joy

I’m a cynical bastard, and I struggle to see the positive in just about anything. And yet, even I’m becoming tired of just about everything related to games being overwhelmingly negative.

It’s never anything but complaints; people moaning about frame rates, resolutions and how shoddy ports are. People spent more time moaning about Arkham Knight’s PC port than how good a game it is, overshadowing Rocksteady’s efforts with complaints. Hypocritical, sure, because I’m guilty of it.

Everything’s about how things are downgraded, or how consoles are holding PC games back, or technical specifications. Conversation revolves around how big a patch is, how broken games are. There are petitions to change things, have developers cancel games or abandon their creative ideas to please a vocal minority.

And then there’s the social justice stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I think that they’re important things that need to be talked about to help the medium grow the hell up, but it just seems that it’s overtaken discourse and commentary on the games themselves. Games are too violent, games are sexist, games aren’t diverse enough.

They’re important topics, but do they have to be applied to everything? On the other side of that, we have people harassing developers, belittling other gamers, being complete asshats and creating an irreparable rift in a community once unified by a love of games.

It’s gamergate this, SJW that. Nintendo’s doomed, Microsoft’s backpeddling and Sony’s broke. It’s about PC Master race superiority, console peasantry and how mobile games ruin everything. There’s nothing but doom and gloom – when it should be about fun.

What do you think? Is the general discourse around videogames becoming all too serious? Do you miss the unbridled optimism and enthusiasm that games could invoke? Or is all this serious business a good thing; a sign that the medium we love is maturing?

It brings me great joy looking at the joy in that single image

The internet changed everything. We all have a soup box now with constant information overload. In the 90s we had to wait for 30 days to get our Nintendo Power mag. See what games were coming out, get to the store the day of release, money over the counter. No reviews, no metacritic, no play videos, nothing.

We went home, plugged it in and pressed play. If it was hard it was hard, if it was broken we found a way to cheat the system.

We had Sprites flickering in and out, we had game freezes, we had codes for save files, we had 1 AV cable with mono input, most of all we had FUN.

That Nintendo Seal of Quality did not really matter either.

When I played Donkey Kong Country for the first time and saw the stop motion graphics from RARE my eyeballs shriveled up like a junkie on a high. Then I wanted to be surprised like that more and more to the point that I became a fussy connoisseur.

Then technology started peaking exceptionally. From the CGI cut scenes of FF7 to the immersion of Team ICO.

As we get older we become more spoilt. That kid in the picture will be fighting it out in a comment section 15 years from now over the Virtual War.

We can’t change it, but maybe, if we change our outlook, it will trickle down and make a difference somehwere down the line. I think it’s time we look in ourselves and try to remember why we love gaming. I swear, you’ll find plenty of reasons 🙂

We are all just looking for the next high because we have the means to do so in communicating on the fly. Nothing wrong with striving for perfection, that’s just human nature. But as you say, if we are able to step back and ask ourselves why do we do this? Then we will understand why Nintendo stick to their traditional outlook.

I loved the Muppet reveal 🙂 They nailed it on the head. You dont need in game teasers and shit. Just the notion that they are making another fun game.

But then I think to myself. I spent allot of my money an a state of the art console. I want this, I expect that. Entitlement.

The outcry over the ending of Mass Effect 3 disgusted me a little, because they listened and went ahead to change their ART that they had envisioned turning them into Art prostitutes.

Kudos to Nintendo, they make solid hardware and fully envisioned games that stay true to themselves.

          I love their traditional ethos.

No most definitely, we are looking for that high. That next big thing, but remember a time when Super Mario Bros was enough for us lol That 8-bit Italian man was all I needed, and honestly, it can still be that way. I remember seeing how much you enjoyed Neptunia. There are many things to enjoy in gaming while still indulging in discussion, it’s just a matter of us not letting anything take over the fun.

The old school will understand. But the competitive youngsters of today will never get the modest nature of our hobby, Its turned more into an interactive Trump card fight than the simple days of mastering hand eye co-ordination with 2 buttons. I feel for them. Now I sound like an Oldfart 😉

Games these days seem to be forced at being socially correct in our lives…But that’s the problem, in games you can be whomever you want to be and break free from “real life” to go and enjoy your own adventure. Not that of what others want you to play and how you should play.

I still don’t understand why Nintendo got so much hate this E3. It represented everything that Nintendo stand for. I suppose people have forgotten how to have fun on their own. Everything has to be on-line shooting while trash talking.

Off topic but good read. Remember the good old days of the RROD, we now get an inside look at the damage control from Peter Moore.

In all honesty. YES, yes it is. The fun and life is being sucked out of gaming, but that’s if you choose to let it be. I swear, E3 2015 brought back a kind of magic, a flame I have not felt in such a long time. I was happy. Genuinely, sincerely happy and even at the peak of this elation I looked online and there were complaints everywhere, fighting and toxicity brewing and that’s when I realized, I don’t care. I was too happy to care, and I thought to myself…Why did I even care in the first place? …So, I chose happiness. I chose fun. I chose to remember why I loved games in the first place. These things will still get to me, I’ll get upset and get caught up in it, but, games are still fun to me, and I’ll be damned if I let anything or anyone ruin it for me. This video perfectly encapsulates I how I felt during E3 and the kind of passion I want to see come back to this industry…

Hey, as long as I can have immense fun playing games, I’m deaf to just about everything else.

But, I think some complaints are warranted (like broken games). People only really go and talk about what angers them. I haven’t really seen much rants about how great this new game is or how excited someone is about a new year of gaming.

Just take everything with a pinch of salt and only buy games worth your money.

The problem is that if you as journalist are too optimistic, people think you’ve been bought by corporations. The internet as a whole is negative. This is not only a problem for the gaming industry these days, but rather a deeper seated problem in society. If you give a high score for a game review, you’ve been bought. Some people just sit and enjoy gaming. There is always a vocal minority that will find an issue with anything you do.
If there is a problem with a product that I’m about to buy, by all means I’d like to know about it, but I visit this site for the good news, not the bad. You aren’t ruining games for me.

I see this when also writing about movies. It’s either great, or crap (Kervyn wrote something about it earlier today actually). It’s like you can’t be cool if you are not either on the winning side or the losing. Look at Bioshock: Infinity. When it came out everyone loved it. Then a few weeks down the line it was COOL to jump on the hate bandwaggon and everyone did a MS. Sad.

Totally agree with Geoff here. While we need to have grown up conversations, we also need to remember that gaming is supposed to be FUN. It’s doubly hard as one who writes about it often – if I’m excited about a game I’m seen as hyping it or being a sell out (although normally you need to get more money to sell out). Here’s hoping that this year we can embrace the positive and just love this thing that’s supposed to make us all happy.

Gotta highlight the good and the bad, but still express your opinion. As long as you give REASONS why you love/hate something, people can decide if they would feel the same and if it’s worth buying for them.

So so much. I’m mostly avoiding gaming sites even, LG included. A lot of article headings (not just LGs) sound like tabloid quality stuff with a sensational angle to them. We have it better than EVER before as gamers, but everyone focusses on the bullshit frame rates, resolutions, DLC, P2W,SJW crap and not enough on the good stuff. I get why, it’s all about the hits (money) and I don’t blame any site for doing it. I’m just not in the mood for it anymore.

I’m not saying don’t report the bullshit, because that’s the only way developers actually change stuff, but it’s not supposed to be the main focus.

I’m buying games and playing them; not only reading about playing games and moaning about them.

Very refreshing; now limit to 3 articles a day and try to read only the good stuff.

LG has actually also been guilty of what Geoff is complaining about here, for instance there has been more than one article moaning/joining in on complaining about dev taking away female option in certain games where in those game series no actual value of having a male/female choice except for a pair of boobs and couple of pronouns.

Gaming is getting too big, I dunno if it’s a billion dollar industry or a trillion. But everyone wants a slice and voice their opinion. So now we have Mobile markets with crappy casual MT laden games, Mobas left and right, Early access shite on Steam so that Jim Sterling can make another Youtube video, EA and WB screwing us again and again, COD every single year till a solar flare kills all technology and middle class people complaining about tits in games when they could run a charity drive for something that matters.

But when I get home I turn on my peasant console and all that noise gets drowned out and that’s why I love gaming. To quote a favourite movie of mine, “nothing is solved but nothing mattered, afterwards we all felt saved” In this world there are few things as exhilarating as finishing a good game.

I don’t think fun was ever the correct word to describe computer games (in fact any game). Rather I would use the word rewarding. You take a professional rugby player, they probably don’t have what you would call fun getting concussions for our entertainment, but they probably get an immense sense of reward for it. Same with reading and films. Not all things we enjoy are actually fun.

Gaming started out that way but as Geoff mentioned, it matured. With all the good and bad attached to it.

As for the perceived lack of fun in games, I don’t think that is going away any time soon. Titles like Fallout, Doom and Just Cause are all games that are designed to put a silly grin on your face.

As for the amount of negative criticism in gaming:

I think there is a lot of jealousy in the criticism, people are always jealous, whether it is of the smooth console releases, PC graphics or the rewarding experience of playing a game that contains politically incorrect scenes, i.e “stop liking the things I don’t like”

The solution is pretty simple, just admit you don’t understand it. I will never understand how someone can enjoy Nintendo games other than pokemon, however it is clear that they do enjoy them. So I accept that.

“Dutch! I take it you met a Hell-Knight rounding the corner again?!”

When you really like a game, you sit back and post something on the internet along the lines of, “This game is awesome” and thats the end of it, or you just shut up and play it more.

But when you dont like the game, you feel the need to go on the fucking warpath and seek vengeance for this game offending you personally with its mediocrity. Its not enough that you dislike it…..others should too.

In the end its a lot easier to hate then love. This is the internet.

I wouldn’t know about any of the negatives without reading media and gaming articles on sites like this, possibly media are too focused on the negatives (obviously as a result of their consumer’s focus). This is not an issue affecting just gaming media alone.

I think games are no longer the domain of teens and toddlers, the very vocal and critical adults are a massive market slice now and we are very fussy about the games we buy, especially when they cost so much. I also think with the boom of internet and social media, people who would normally not have a voice, now do, hence the “Vocal Minority” can drown out the blase majority. As humans we do love to focus on the negatives in all things (Just watch any TV news cycle).

So, with more critical adult voices being heard and our inherent attraction to the negative, we get the shite-storm we now have before us.

The silver lining, is we here still love playing games, so read the negative articles, expound a “WtF” or “Uhuh” and pick up your preferred “Human Interface” device and game on.

That being said, if your aren’t a gamer, don’t comment about us with uninformed vitriol (hate those guys)…

i want to agree, but its just not true, GTA has an 18 age restriction, yet parents complain its too violent and crude for their 13 year old children who pirated the game, and the devs are forced to respond to that.

I couldn’t agree more. I’m absolutely sick to death of listening to people bitch and moan about how a game doesn’t cater for their specific needs and how I should feel bad for enjoying mindless fun.

The only thing worse is the fact that social media warriors flock to people who add nothing to society but complaints and endless whining

enjoying mindless fun is all good and well.

but when a game is advertised as “the ultimate batman experience” i expect a challenge of some sort.

arkham asylum and arkham city were glorious and had a few challenges, even arkham origins had a few decent boss fights. but arkham knight, two face was a regular NPC, firefly was a scripted take down requiring little input from the user and i didnt even get to fight azreal.

i agree that people just harp on and on about stupid shit, which is what i think is the problem. the real issues are being glossed over because they are more interested in complaining about racial and feminist representation etc.

mainstream attention is bombarding the scene with infinite demands, which forces the devs to gloss over key elements of the game.

Yes & no – because you’re talking about two different things – games and the games industry.

I think the games industry as a whole is immature, because it’s grown so quickly, and needs to learn to deal with criticism. Whether criticism leveled is valid or not is a different story, and also far more likely to be subjective than objective, and you’ll either agree or not. If you don’t like the criticism you’ve got two choices, respond to it or ignore it. However anyone trying to stifle said criticism can fuck off. You also don’t really see this childish backlash against any criticism in other art forms. You don’t see Twilight fans shitting their pants when someone disses Twilight like gamers are wont to do when an oh-so-precious game is criticised.

Everyone wants the game they spent their money on to be fun to play on the day they buy it. People talk more, and more loudly, when they’re unhappy with a purchase than when they’re happy – that’s just how it works, and the internet magnifies that because it’s easy to find similar opinions.

I’m don’t even want to go into that Batman cluster fuck again. They fucked up big time and all the “but it’s not a problem for meeeeeeeeee so stop complaiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnning!” won’t change that. That does overshadow the game itself, and it should because it’s not right. And that’s a problem caused by the games industry, not the game.

I’m having an awesome time playing W3 and I’ve experienced a couple of crashes, quite a few minor bugs, and I’ve even got a couple of bugged quests in my quest log right now. I don’t complain about it because it’s rare and doesn’t detract from the overall experience for me.

tl;dr Games are fun to play, but the games industry needs to stop pulling their stupid shit & fucking it up for the players.

the internet gives everyone a voice. IRL, the douchebags are always the loudest, online, the douchebags are always the loudest.
the silent majority are always the ones getting on and playing the games.

the loud minority are making points though, but theyr over selling them.
they make a noise, get confronted, feel the need to defend themselves and it just scales upward to the point that no one even knows what the argument was about.

batman arkham knight, problems aside, wasnt as good as people made it out to be, i blame the current gaming scene for that, too much handholding and simplifying to make the games appeal to the casual majority.
its a fun game nontheless, but its no 9/10.

mainstream attention is forcing every game in our dark cultist gaming world to become a child friendly pg13 romantic comedy.
my parents use facebook and the internet, along with apparently every other parent out there, you cant so much as look at a cute cat video on facebook nowadays without someone shouting “ANIMAL CRUELTY”
i always thought that wisdom and intelligence was like an automatic part of levelling up, but looking at comments online, the most ignorant comments are always from 40-50 year olds who have just discovered that the internet exists.
i criticise my friends when they act like theyr still in highschool, but apparently, that never goes away, which terrifies me.

the internet has turned everyone into activists and keyboard warriors.
