FFD: What games would you use to get others in to gaming?

For many of us, gaming can be like a drug; something we become addicted to. We devour gaming news, want to play all the newest games, we keep playing old ones we love – and sometimes, it’s a relationship that can even be abusive.

Before it gets to that point though, many people need an introduction to games, something that draws them in – a sort of gateway drug. My own introduction (and subsequent addiction) to games came early on, thanks to the Atari 2600 and my need to chase high scores in Centipede.

These days though, there are so many games, on so many platforms that it’s daunting for somebody who perhaps has only a mild interest in games to jump in. People need guidance. Pretend for a moment that you’re a pusher. What games would you introduce to people as a way to get them interested in this hobby you love?

Perhaps something you could show your mom or dad, so they can understand games a little better. Perhaps something for your non-gaming partner so that the two of you could co-op.

Here, I think, is where VR will in some ways prove itself – in many ways, similarly to how the Wii did. Because of how it directly ties in with and tricks human brains, It’s far easier for somebody not versed in games to grasp, because it’s so visceral, and with the right controllers, so natural; you’re doing the same sort of things you’d do in the real world.

But it’s not the only way to get somebody interested in games – and they don’t have to be mobile games like Candy Crush. I’ve gotten people hooked on musical puzzler Lumines which scratches that Tetris itch (with better beats!), and have sold countless people on the joys of Kingdom Rush and Plants vs Zombies. I’ve even got my dear old, games-hating mum hooked on Peggle.

Pretend for a moment that you’re a pusher. What games would you introduce to people as a way to get them interested in this hobby you love?

Not for a gamer. Imagine someone first picking up a game, never played before. ME is daunting. All those menus and stats and fps + rpg gameplay. There is so much going on for someone new.

I introduced a person to ME on pc and she finished it and now she has a massive gaming PC and has finished all of ME and is also trying KoToR. Nothing in the menus are daunting. Stats maybe but at the end of the day you can finish easy in the gear you start off with.

Everyone is different I guess. ME wouldn’t be one I’d think to introduce someone to gaming with though.

I tried introducing my mum to games. Failed badly but I discovered she like watching me play. But I’m not liking the fact that she laughs at me when I fall in to abyss somewhere.

Talking about mom. I introduced mine with Starcraft. Turns out she finally understood why I could forget about the world, when she forgot about picking me up. 3 times. At night. She vowed never to play games again. XD

My mom doesn’t ask. She just talks, while in a hectic section or whatever. Doesn’t matter, middle of raid boss in MMO, or heavy boss fight or during an important STORY fucking cutscene. She just talks over it. Like “fuck your game, watchu gon’ do?”

            May 6, 2016 at 10:57

Mass effect 2 is possibly the easiest game i have ever played and can be played without experiencing ME1.
Mass effect 3 can be played on story mode only.
ME1 was perhaps a little more challenging, alot less hand holding.

This is a very good question. What to choose? Something with puzzles? Something shooty-pew-pew? Some RTS?

Has to be something that stimulates the ol’ noggin.

I’m thinking, Half Life 2. Or Portal.

What I’m NOT thinking is something multiplayer.

I’ll go with Portal, then Portal 2

Honestly, everyone is different. I’ve tried getting my gf into Borderlands, but she just isn’t interested. Yet she can play hours and hours of DOTA or The Forest and it’s no issue at all.

So, really. I think I’ll need to know the person before I can make a suggestion. Gaming is just too diverse.

A fun one. Fun as defined by every person being different.

No one size fits all answer here, I think.

most common? Tetris like games, that can be played quite quickly, but can be expanded upon by the skilled player.

Take Chess, for example. Simple moves, but you can learn much, much more and complicate the game if you choose. But you do not have to.

Well I’d start them off slow with something easy to pick up & play – story stuff like the Telltale games, maybe some cool little side scrollers like Dust or MotN, even arcade stuff like PinballFX2. Or if they want something action-y maybe Borderlands or Warframe where you can co-op & it’s not particularly difficult to get around. And then I’d give them Witcher 3.

I used WoW to get my ex into gaming, guess that didn’t work in my favor.

I’d probably use something in the vein of Ori and the Blind Forest, or maybe even Unravel at this moment in time. Something that will captivate and looks good.

Now I don’t play WoW, and won’t. Just those few literally took up 6 nights a week. No thanks. I like to play other games too.

But there is a story. If you read the item description, then realise that if you walk around a certain rock four times ANTI-clockwise, making sure to have a completely different and unrelated weapon equipped AND making sure to jump at the exact right spot at the end of each circuit, which in turn leads you to explore a cave where you’ll die. Then do it all over again, and when you get your souls back from the cave realise you should’ve been heading west to a completely different cave, not north, because an NPC at the shrine coughed 3 times when you walked past them, so you have to start all over AGAIN in order to find the first part of the 4000 piece puzzle, then you’ll really understand the story. It’s so easy. Git gud, n00b!
