Sometimes, tech and ideas are a little ahead of their time – coming out years before the general populace is ready for them. One such technology that could finally break through the niche is Virtual Reality, which is set to become commercially available on a large scale this year.
Of course, it’s not new. We’ve been sold the VR dream in cycles, and every decade somebody tries to come along and convince the world that Virtual Reality is the next big thing.
It’s something we saw with the Wii’s motion control, which kicked off a wave of similar products, other motion-sensing peripherals and me too’s – like PlayStation Move and of course, Kinect. But motion control isn’t new either. Nintendo’s powerglove dabbled with it in the times of the NES, and SEGA’s ill-fated Activator had kids kicking and punching their way through Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter decades ago.
It’s not just ahead-of-its-time tech itself that’s in for a resurgence – we see it in games and ideas too. Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen are bringing back a genre that’s been long dead – the space sim. Telltale, Double Fine and other developers like The Odd Gentlemen have managed to rather successfully re-ignite passions for the humble old adventure game.
Tech and ideas are cyclical; they keep coming back. Which things do you think are ready for a resurgence?

Never been a fan of turn based anything. RTS, combat, etc… another reason why Jagged Alliance, and the like, didn’t really pull me in.

Everyone has a genre they grew up with 😛 I myself prefer anything with leveling up and progression, making me feel like I have an end point to reach. And FF was the first thing that gave me that craving for progression.

Agreed. I grew up with story based games, where no leveling was included, or FPS… so those are what I go for a lot of the time. I do like my RPG’s that I can level in though (the likes of Diablo, Torchlight, Sacred, etc), just don’t give me turn based combat 😛

Turn-based is a very specific game type. A lot of people don’t like it much.
I’m a bit indifferent about it. I don’t usually play them but when I do I get stuck in a single game for days. (especially on 4x games)

Yeah, I’m sitting here thinking about all the old games that I loved playing, trying to think of something of the same type that isn’t really available these days, but there’s so much variety now, something pretty much has it covered.
About the only thing I can think of is a Fallout game that hearkens back to Fallout 1 and 2. Good ol’ isometric turn based action.

Most of these old games/ideas that people say they’d like revived never actually died. You just have to look harder for them because media stops reporting on it and other games advertising budgets eclipse them.
For example, you mentioned Elite dangerous and Star Citizen bringing back the space styled sim, when EVE Online has been going for 12 years and by all means is a grand game.
Its more about whats in the spotlight and what isnt.
