The Ouya is one console that has been turning heads in the last couple of days. The idea of an open-source device that encourages modding and hacking, prioritising good ol’ fun games over visuals and spectacle is an intriguing idea. But is it a necessary one?
Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony currently dominate the console and gaming market, and to a larger extent, our wallets as well. Sure the Ouya is going to be boasting free games, or games with free portions attached to their traditional pay to play format, but at the end of the day, it could end up disrupting the market, and the last thing we need is another replay of 1983.
Make no mistake, the Ouya could result in tons of fantastic games, but at the moment, it’s also a rather shiny magnet for the shovelware legions. So here’s the question? Do we even need the Ouya console, or is the market already over-crowded enough with the big three and their various products?
