FFD360

The Xbox 360 has been discontinued. Or at least, production of the Xbox 360 has been discontinued. You’ll still be able to buy one, until inventory of the thing is depleted. I have an unfathomable amount of love for the Xbox 360. Right up until the moment that Microsoft lost focus with the system (around about the time Kinect was introduced, not co-incidentally) it was last generation’s very best gaming system.

A massive library of great games (that weren’t, contrary to opinion just shooters), the most functional online system and better performance from multiplatform games – a situation that seems to be reversed this generation.

“I am incredibly proud of all of the work and dedication that went into development of the Xbox 360 hardware, services and games portfolio over the last decade. And I’m grateful to the fans for their continued passion and support,” Phil Spencer said.

“While we’ve had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us.”

I can’t actually believe it’s ten years old – and I’ve owned one for nearly that long. Ok, technically I’ve owned 5, because three of them suffered from that horrible red ring nonsense. Towards the end of its life, Microsoft also had very few exclusives that weren’t built around Kinect, so its last few years have been rough.

But the first few? Magical. The Xbox 360 responsible for some of my greatest enduring friendships, it’s one of the reasons I’m part of this site and it’s home to some of my very favourite gaming memories.

But you’re not here to hear about me! Tell us! With the 360 discontinued, what are your best and worst Xbox 360 memories?

Internet is a very touchy subject for South African gamers. I often look at Europe and the States longingly and wonder about their lag free utopia with no latency to speak of.

Although, I’ve found that the 360 had driven internet uptake as many of my friends wanted to experience online gaming, free demo’s and DLC.

The Xbox 360. Best memory? Diablo 3, actually working well on a console. Also that controller, man. From PS2 to that, it felt like my hands were being pampered, it was amazing to not feel pain after an hour of gaming.

Worst memory? Gears of War. 4 hour single player campaign, didn’t live up to the hype and left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Was just starting to get interesting, thinking awesome, act 2 incoming. But that was the entire game. To this day won’t touch another GoW game.

Worst memory was probably when I bought a red collectors edition 360 and I had it for 3 days when I got the red ring of death. Best memory was the feeling I had when I got my first 360 and I played Gears of War. It felt like a brave new world. I also bought Lost Planet and was blown away when I got the first 360. Cherished memories. Also, HD was a thing.

Yea, the concave joysticks were really nice. The PS ones didn’t work lekker for me, but I see they took that from the Xbox and applied it to the PS4 controller. And the PS4 controller is much nicer.

Oh, this machine brought me much much much joy over the years.

Best: jamming Gears of War horde mode with 4 other friends.
Worst: most of the multiplayer co-op games were designed for only 4 players, so one guy was always out!

gears was the only game that allowed us to jam together at once.

Oh, and that silly thing that some games, even though they seemed designed for system link co-op, forced you to play on Xbox Live. That sucked somewhat.

Well the I don’t actually own one but I’ve played on my friends console. And the best memory there is the girls night my roomie and I had, playing that dance game. It was fun. The worst thing… My roomie got married and moved out!

haha I just had to. In all honesty I use the 360 controller on my pc for most games. Basically everything that isn’t a FPS or RTS game. Started jamming DA:I again. The game is actually pretty cool once stop comparing it to W3. Also, I’ve been without internet for about 2 months, so I got forced to play it and now I like it very much.

Funny thing is when you use the 360 controller for PC gaming, It kinda makes the whole concept of a console redundant. We apes are a fickle lot.

These days that does ring true. Microsoft are changing things up. I guess the whole console thing is still relevant cause Sony has their epic exclusive brands.

Best: Gears 1 multiplayer. The controller. Plus everything worked without you having to be online. XBL service was also excellent.

The best thing that ever happened to my Xbox360 was it getting stolen.
1st RROD, happened during warrenty, so we got it fixed.
2nd, the DVD drive went mad and scratched one of my DVDs

Sold the games we had, and put the money towards a PS3.

Also, people have different view points and needs in their lives. I would not want us to all have the same needs, wants and desires.

Many people lead full lives, family, church, sports and still play the occasional game.

I am real. I believe in people and in the freedom people have to express and have different opinions and view points. I believe in a freedom that allows people to be expressive and creative and live full and balanced life. A balanced life has a job, and has areas that are not a job.

I thought that we could talk and genuinely express views. I was wrong

I have a job, but thank you for the suggestions I get another. I only need one.

Perhaps there are cultural differences here, that cannot be overcome. I, by the way, welcome different cultures, that bring different viewpoints and ideas to my little slice of the world.
