How to permanently switch off your Dual Shock 4 lightbar

DS4

I like the PlayStation 4 Dual Shock controller. It’s a helluva lot better than the PS3’s controller, a  firm piece of plastic with some neat features. What isn’t neat however, is that damn lightbar. It’s a nice idea, but one in practice that has very little functionality beyond shepherding ships past dangerous rocks in foggy weather. Even with the latest firmware update providing an option to dim it, the Dual Shock controller still burns with the intensity of a star. But you can easily remedy that. Let me show you how.

First, you’ll need the following:

  • The controller itself
  • Scissors
  • Insulation tape

Spend several days finding the spot on your insulation tape where you can peel it off. Say goodbye to your friends and family before you embark on this journey:

PS4 controller (1)

Once the ham demon has been vanquished, roll a small strip off and snip it like you’re attending a Brit Milah:

PS4 controller (2)

Cover the light bar deftly, deftly, leaving enough space to still charge your controller every 20 minutes:

PS4 controller (3)

And there you go. Did it work?

SHIT.

Bright

MY EYES!

MY EYES

THE BEACON IS LIT! GONDOR CALLS FOR AID!

Gondor

SOLAR FLARE ATTACK!

Solar Flare

Well, at least it’s slightly better now.

PS4 controller (4)

And that’s how you fix the lightbar on a PS4 controller. Tune in next week, when I teach you how to adopt a child.

The thing is, I’ve genuinely left the tape on. It does help.

Gonna do it.It annoys the crap out of me. Was playing Resi Evil in the dark and I can see the reflection on the TV actually even when dim.

Well at least you can’t see your reflection, that would be scarier than the game! *RUNS

hahahaha nice. But I must say, I’ve never really noticed the light bar on my ds4. But that can be cause my tv is slightly higher than where I’m sitting so don’t get to see the reflection.

A better option would be to do this:

Dude, have you ever scratched an itch on your chin or nose while playing? You shine those interstellar flares right in your eyes every time. Very cool add-on’s btw.

Some people see it reflect on the TV. Not me though. I have two TVs so the angle probably works in my favour

You’re looking at the WRONG TV. Which explains why when playing Dark Souls you think you are actually controlling the characters from Bold and the Beautiful!

Enjoyed the read. I installed a switch. Just a simple on off trigger. cost me R6.50

Be careful tho! Once you open that controller, every single piece wants to fall out and does not fit inside again!
Took me a few hours to get the thing back together.

One thing I do like about the light bar is that it illuminates the room a bit when playing with the room lights off.
