Casting Call: Gears of War

Welcome to Casting Call, a new feature that we will be running on the site. In Casting Call we take a look at popular video games in the industry and have a bit of a poke around Hollywood to see who could be cast as the roles of the characters if a movie was to be made. This obviously excludes movies that have already been made(thanks Uwe for shortening the list considerably…). Readers can comment, share their ideas and opinions and flame each other to their hearts content. (Forget that last one. Play nice!)

This week we have the ever popular Gears of War. The movie is said to be hitting the silver screen in the summer of 2010. So, this begs the question… who will be cast as the leading roles for the adaptation of Epic’s award winning gore-fest.

We are going to try and keep things realistic here. Keep in mind that these are game adaptations, which haven’t really been major pullers of huge Hollywood superstars. Of course there are a few exceptions, such as Angelina Jolie taking the role as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movies. So, we are looking for the type of actors and actresses who aren’t necessarily struggling to find work, but don’t exactly have movie scripts filling up their mail boxes.

Lets move on to this week’s choices.

Marcus Phoenix: Dominic Purcell

Many of you will know Dominic from the hit TV series Prison Break in his role as Lincoln Burrows aka “Linc the Sink”. While he bears only a slight resemblance to Marcus Phoenix, his hard features combined with a talent for acting gives the producers more than enough reason to consider him for the role. The fact that he has experience playing an imprisoned bad-ass probably works in his favour too.

Runners-up: Mickey Rourke, Batista (Yes, the wrestler)

Dominic Santiago: Edgar Ramirez

If anyone of you readers have seen Edgar Ramirez in his role as the Bounty Hunter, Choco, in the 2005 movie Domino (based on real events), you will know that he really knows how to pull of a mean Hispanic bad-ass-gun-for-hire. Not many people will recognise him right off the bat, but I definately think he could pull the role off really well.

Runners-up: Errr, any ideas? And don’t say Vin Diesel or the Rock!

Damon Baird: Scott Caan

A lot of you may be familiar with Scott Caan, with parts in movies such as Ocean’s Eleven, Varsity Blues and Gone in Sixty Seconds.

Damon Baird is a wise-ass with a loose tongue, and if Scott Caan’s previous characters have been anything to gauge by, he will pull it off beautifully. With the right look, a big enough build to fit into what must be a ridiculously heavy suit of armour and the happy-go-lucky attitude, I see him as a definite contender for the role.

Runners-up: Ryan Reynolds, Val Kilmer (don’t ask me, he has been popular on forums apparently)

Augustus Cole: Terry Tate (aka Mighty Rasta)

Ever seen that Reebok advert that has an NFL player hanging around an office annihilating anyone who isn’t doing their jobs properly? You haven’t? Well check it out here.

For those of you who don’t know Terry Tate was the actual voice actor for Augustus Cole in Gears of War. Not only that, but after watching him record his lines, the team at Epic decided to beef Cole up significantly to match Terry Tate’s gargantuan body. He is then, in essence, Augustus Cole in the flesh. He may not have the most acting experience in the world, but it’s not like Cole is going to be doing anything other than kicking ass and chewing bubble-gum throughout the movie. Who better to play Augustus Cole than Augustus Cole?

Runners-up: Michael Clark Duncan, Terry Crews

Well, there you have it folks. What do you think? Any suggestions on the choices? Who would you pick and why? Is there someone blatantly obvious that hasn’t been included? Also, let us know if you have any requests for the next Casting Call, and we will look into it.

Personally, Bruce Willis would have got the nod from me to play Marcus. 🙂

Nice addition to the site! Keep ’em coming.

I couldn’t argue with any of those picks…

I also thought of the Prison Break dude when this was first mentioned…. He would be the perfect Marcus…

As for future games for movies? We are going to have to do a Metal Gear Solid one….

Hmmm, not bad, although I think I’d save Dominic Purcell for Kratos in a God of War movie.

Just one thing: I wouldn’t start scraping the bottom of the B-movie actor barrel just because we’re talking video game movies here. Start bringing in A-list actors, directors and writers and you will see a jump in the quality and prestige of cinematic game adaptations.

I think Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell’s Prince of Persia could be huge turning point for the genre.

Someone else to consider for Marcus could be another guy from Prison Break, Wade Williams (Bellick the prison guard). He looks a bit more like Marcus, he just needs to bulk up a bit.

Dominic Purcell for Marcus & Tate for Cole are great choices. But I don’t like your other choices. I say Franky G for Dom.

I agree with all your casting calls… One thing I’d like to point out though, the actor who plays Terry Tate is Lester Speight…
