Tuks Gaming Club

In November of 2012 I wrote a little somethin’-somethin’ about a club spawning with the hopes of bringing eSports to the University of Pretoria. It’s been a long road to achieving just that, but the Tuks Mind Sports Club is now a thing; a real thing!

GamersXtreme started as a partnership between two passionate gamers, Estian Jaco Hough and Christo Naude who has been spending the last nine months working towards their goal. With Hough at the reins, GamersXtreme has gone from just a club to the University of Pretoria’s “Tuks Mind Sports Club”, GamersXtreme has also requested that the club be registered as an official Tuks sports club.

“Starting a Mind Sports club at a University means dealing with a number of complications – some universities might have less. It all depends on what it is that you’re looking to start; and what it is that you need in order to do so. Starting from day one every single day has been a learning experience. There’s always something that pops up that might pose a problem, or on a rare occasion perhaps even an idea as a solution.

We’ve spent the past 8-9 months communicating with Tuks so as to try and get the best start for the club on campus that it can hope for. It’s been frustrating, time consuming and very difficult to get the ‘club’ where it’s at the moment. But there’s no regret. Spending the time that we did communicating has been beneficial for the club – since we’ve been shown good support from different Tuks departments. This makes the club registration process so much smoother.

With all the effort put into starting a Mind Sports Club at the University of Pretoria we can gladly say we’re wearing massive smiles by realizing that it is only a matter of time before we will be recognized and supported as an official Tuks Sports Club.”, says Hough.

The next step for the club is securing a venue, from where events can be hosted. The club is also in the process of creating competitive gaming teams for games like League of Legends, Dota 2, Battlefield 3, Black Ops 2 and StarCraft 2 amongst others. It’s all very professional as the club has a constitution and committee, consisting of:

-Estian Hough, Chairperson
-Christo Naude, Vice Chairperson
-Michael Garvie, Secretary
-Niel Coetzee, treasurer
-Matthew Klein, Additional Officer
-Rudi de Lange, Additional Officer
-Ricardo Ludeke, Additional Officer

Want to be a part of this club? You can be, by completing the registration form. GamersXtreme has also been working on a website, which will be revealed in the near future. In the mean time, you can check out their Facebook page.
