Major League Gaming, the MLG, has been around for over 10 years now. Since then, the organisation has hosted a plethora of eSport events consisting of competitive games spanning varied genres. Their titles of choice for example include the likes of Halo, Mortal Kombat, StarCraft, and many, many more.The MLG been around long enough that they’ve now reached one heck of a milestone – their 100th event. They will be celebrating the occasion this October via the 2015 MLG World Finals, where pro Dota 2 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare gamers will battle it out for their slice of a $500 000 prize pool.
The Finals will take place in New Orleans, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, over the weekend of October 16-18. Mike Sepso , the MLG president and co-founder, explains what fans can expect (via Polygon):
“For the better part of a decade we’ve been hosting incredible tournaments and given out an insane amount of prize money, and we wanted to honor that tradition with our 100th event by making it bigger and better than ever before. Fans will get multiple competitions, the best teams in the world, and all the excitement of New Orleans in what we hope will be an event to remember for years to come.”
An event to remember for sure! I will definitely be spectating the Dota 2 component of it.
As a side note, because I found it rather impressive and interesting, here’s what the MLG has managed to accomplish over all the years of their existence (via the MLG website):
- Over 50 thousand live event competitors
- Over 45 million online matches played by 10 million registered users
- Over 13.5 Million awarded in prize money
The numbers Mason! With eSports continuing to grow in popularity, it isn’t hard to imagine the MLG being around for another decade. Here’s hoping they continue to help competitive gaming grow, and that they continue to grow themselves.
