KWESE is a new name in the South African eSports realm, and while we haven’t heard much from them since their inception, today we see just a glimpse of their end-game plan to raise the level of eSports in South Africa. There’s a whole untapped market out there, a market where a large majority of South Africa’s population aren’t jumping at the chance of competing, and that’s about to change. The KWESE ACE FIFA tournament boasts a R100 000 prize pool, one of many large FIFA tournaments which continue to fly under the radar.

You might be thinking, why FIFA? But allow me to explain. FIFA is game played by millions of South Africans. It’s a game that has a large social following, and played mostly in a casual manner between friends. There is a sizeable competitive community, but tapping into the millions who play it on a casual basis could unlock an entire new demographic of players who will inevitably be immersed into the world of competitive gaming. The KWESE ACE tournament is the perfect start as it offers a diverse prize pool with payouts for both qualifiers and the final tournament. Here’s the breakdown:

Qualifier Prize pool

  • 1st Place: R10 000,00
  • 2nd Place: R5 000,00
  • 3rd Place: R3 000,00
  • 4th Place: R2 000,00

Cape Town Qualifier Prize pool

  • 1st Place: R10 000,00
  • 2nd Place: R5 000,00
  • 3rd Place: R3 000,00
  • 4th Place: R2 000,00

FINALS

  • 1st Place: R25 000,00
  • 2nd Place: R15 000,00
  • 3rd Place: R7 000,00
  • 4th Place: R3 000,00
  • Finalists Bonus Round: R10000

The Tournament will kick off at rAge gaming expo on the 7th of October 2016 in Johannesburg with the finals kicking off on the 9th of October 2016. The tournament will be a sudden death knock out, where entrants will be whittled down to a final set of 16 contestants who will battle it out in a double elimination knockout for their spots in the finals that will take place in November.

Preliminary rounds for Cape Town will take place on the 28th, 29th and 30th of October. Winners from these rounds will be flown to Johannesburg for the epic finale where winners will compete for their share of the prize pool worth R100 000.

This adds yet another exciting tournament to the rAge roster and will run alongside major tournaments in Counter-Strike, Dota 2 and Call of Duty, proving that FIFA belongs in the upper echelons of eSports in South Africa. More tournaments of this caliber, bringing in a new eSports demographic, are what this country needs to truly showcase the growth of the industry – but more on that later.

    I’m no accountant but I’m counting R90 000 in total winnings, not R100 000.
It seems like rAge this year will be buzzing with competitions, good to see eSports in SA’s getting the push forward it deserves.
