Honouring the sporting legends of yesteryear has always been a major attraction. The honour of being named a member of the “Hall of Fame” is something I’d imagine every sporting star hopes to achieve. The Electronic Sports League announced yesterday that they will be opening their own eSports Hall of Fame to honour eSports legends which newcomers may not be familiar with.

“The Esports Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving the rich history of competitive video games. Our goal is to honor the legacy and to tell the stories of the players and people who have made great contributions to esports.”

Ken “Hot_bid” Chen, an eSports personality and presenter, announced the new feature on Yahoo eSports after joining ESL last year as their creative director.

ESL will play no major role in the selection process of nominees. Instead, a panel of writers, hosts, commentators and coaches will partake in the voting process. Nominees will be inducted at major ESL events, beginning later this year at ESL One Cologne. The first selection will be for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Eventually, the Hall of Fame will include players from Starcraft I, Starcraft II, Dota, Dota 2 and a number of fighting games. The Hall of Fame will follow a similar rule to its conventional counterpart in the sense that players need to be retired for at least one year prior to their nomination.

American Football, Basketball and Baseball all have a physical display of Hall of Famers, which is the end goal for ESL as the initial stages will be purely virtual. As an avid eSports enthusiast, I can only hope I can one day visit the eSports Hall of Fame.
