Critter Gaming was established around two months ago . It’s a local, South African eSports platform with the goal of taking professional gaming beyond simply being a hobby. Next week, they’re hosting their very first tournament. The game of choice is Dota 2 – competitors will be playing for their share of a R12000 prize pool.

Firstly, what is Critter Gaming exactly? Here’s a quick blurb from the website:

Critter is a tounament hosting platform founded by 4 enthusiastic gamers late 2014. We believe that gaming should, and will be made into a professional sport in South Africa. Thus Critter was founded to promote the eSports community by hosting competitive online gaming tournaments.

We believe that there are many talented individuals in South African gaming. We would like to use this platform to promote and grow the South African gaming scene, because professional gaming should not just be a hobby, but rather a lifestyle.

Our mission is to continuously host well co-ordinated tournaments that contains large CASH prize pools. We’re currently focusing on hosting tournaments for DotA 2 and will move on to other games once we’ve established a community.

This Dota 2 tournament is the first of what they hope will be many. Here’s a breakdown of the dates and prize pool:

After months of hard work, we are finally ready to launch our first tournament. This will take place between 22 June – 28 June, the prize money will be R12 000 divided among the top 2 teams of the 3 different pools (R4 000 per pool, R3 000 1st place, R1 000 2nd place).

Unfortunately if you were planning to enter yourself, all 36 slots have already been filled. You can at least spectate however, which you may want to consider because the tournament has the likes of Bravado, NewB, and Ventus (the current top 3 teams in the DGL) competing.

If you’re interested, be sure to keep an eye on the Critter Gaming website for more information.

Nice to see that the community is taking matters into their own hands. I really do hope eSports in SA gets a nice boost from this, as well as other tournaments such as DGL and those hosted by Orena and Jukes eSports lounge etc. Keep it up guys! Hopefully I’ll be able to start playing some Dota again in the near future.
