CivilWar - Spider-Man - Captain America_820

When watching that awesome Captain America: Civil War trailer from last year, did you notice something amiss? A certain red and blue, friendly neighbourhood something perhaps? Yep, there was not a single frame to be found that showed off young Tom Holland as Marvel’s new in-universe Spider-Man, even though we know for a fact that he will be debuting in the movie. I – like just about everybody else on the internet – concluded that this was just because Marvel was not pulling a Batman v Superman and throwing surprise characters in our faces in the trailers just for shits and giggles. Indeed a marketing tactic that should be applauded, right?

Well, kind of, because that may not be what happened. It turns out that one of the main reasons why Marvel is yet to show us anything about Spider-Man, is because they’re still working out what they are legally allowed to show us of Spider-Man!

Tom Holland - Spider-Man

As you may recall, the movie rights to Spider-Man had been held exclusively by Sony until early last year, when in an unprecedented move, spurred on by the poor reception of Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony finally signed a co-production deal with Marvel that would allow the comic book movie studio to bring ol’ Webhead into the proper Marvel Cinematic Universe. Except that nearly a year later, that deal is actually not finalized yet. This very surprising news was revealed by Captain America: Civil War and The Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo during an interview with Collider, in which they were asked to explain why all the Marvel Spider-Man stuff is being kept so hush-hush:

Part of the reasons of what was so secretive was that the deals were always lagging slightly behind how we were using the character. We were always in danger of upsetting the deal—there were still sensitive issues going on between the two studios that they needed to agree on. When we were casting Tom Holland, when we were screen-testing him for the movie, there was a whole very involved kind of process that was under the radar and secretive, because of the fact that it was still a sensitive business issue.

… The reason why I preface that is we’re still kind of in “deal zone”. The reason why we still won’t talk about [the costume] is that Marvel and Sony still have to work out what uses they have for the character, on a promotional level, on a commercial level. There’s still complications as far as that goes that involves business deals.

So basically they can’t reveal the character yet, because Marvel and Sony’s lawyers still haven’t worked out who’s getting what cut of the inevitable merchandising based on his appearance? I mean, on the one hand, I’m actually glad that there will be some genuine surprises left for the movie, but on the other hand, they do know that the movie releases in just over 3 months, right?!

You can check out the full interview with the Russos below. It’s actually very intriguing, with them talking things like the tone of Civil War, will there really be 67 heroes in Infinity War, and even how they got Robert Redford to cook for them.

Captain America: Civil War is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016.

Not stupid – clever. The more they drag their heels and the closer the release date, the more leverage they have in negotiations. They’re basically playing Spider-chicken.

Clearly Sony don’t like making money, because at this point anything that Marvel would have given them is most probably better than what they would make going it alone.

Well to be fair Lazygamer deals with gaming and the gaming culture in general which also includes geek culture for comics etc which is exactly where this fits in. So not really that much of a stretch for them to report on geek culture movies/comics

I like to think a lot of gamers have interest in a certain type of movies, in particular the superhero type movies. I think this crossover is great, as long as it stick to topic, i.e. of definite interest to most gamers.

This is one thing that annoyed me from the last Avengers movie. They have too many characters in the movie and you do not get a chance to see a full proper action scene with each character.

At some point if you add just too many characters, your movie becomes this constant flashing and scene jumping stuff. Can make you very sick…
