Marvel may have its fair share of heavyweight villains, but there’s something about Thanos that makes him stand out from any rogues gallery that is obsessed with money and world domination. In the comics, Thanos has had one goal that has driven him on an unrelenting quest over the years. Love. Yes, love. It’s just a pity that he happens to be in love with the universal personification of Death, a mistress that he loves so much that he’s more than willing to butcher the entire universe in her name to earn her affections.
And that’s something that Thanos has done before actually, When he first wore the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe with a mere wave of his hands. Just like that, untold trillions died in a single instant just so that he could earn a Valentine’s Day card from his love. And according to sources over at LRM Online, those classic Infinity storylines will serve as the source material for Avengers: Infinity War.
Take it with a massive pinch of salt for now, but LRM sources says that Avengers: Infinity War will adapt the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War storylines into one film. Here’s a synopsis for both of those events, via Marvel:
Infinity Gauntlet
When the Mad Titan, Thanos, acquires the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet and erases half the universe, the survivors must attempt to topple an omnipotent opponent! Led by the resurrected Adam Warlock and aided by primal cosmic forces, Earth’s protectors enter cosmic warfare in a six-issue event written by Jim Starlin and featuring the art of George Perez and Ron Lim!
Infinity War
The Magus, the purged, evil side of Adam Warlock believed to have been dead, has returned in order to collect the Infinity Gems and recreate the Infinity Gauntlet itself. He sent evil doppelgangers of Marvel’s superheroes to attack and usurp the originals. Thanos, exiled since his defeat during the Infinity Gauntlet event, learned of the Magus’ plans and set out to aid Adam Warlock and the heroes in defending the universe.
Sodium-pinching aside, the term “adaptation” is loosely applied here. What Marvel has done in recent years with their projects, is cherry-pick the best content from them and woven that into a singular story. The idea of Death being a part of the MCU isn’t too far off however. We’ve already got Cate Blanchett as the Asgardian Death Goddess in Thor: Ragnarok, so there’s that link if Marvel is going with it.
But a single film with a death-count that makes the final battle of Man of Steel look like peanuts in comparison? Man, the internet is going to be on fire in response to that. Avengers: Infinity War starts filming in November, for a May 4 release in 2018. And in case you’re wondering just how much power each gem has in the Infinity Gauntlet, here’s a handy primer.

Take your pick, at this point in the comics, atleast half the cast should have died, come back to life, thrown into outer space, betrayed their friends and made good with them, switched out iterations of the character, switched iterations again, been torn to pieces, travelled back in time to prevent their own birth, also died again and come back to life again again.
