Thank Zordon, the Power Rangers movie will feature the original theme song

“AAAAH! AFTER TEN THOUSAND YEARS I’M FREE! IT’S TIME TO CONQUER EARTH,” one Rita Repulsa shrieks after spending a few millennia in a garbage can on the Moon.

Guitars begin to tune up. Riffs are banged out, the tastiest of licks hammer reality into submission and a chorus begins chanting as Zordon demands that the voice of Invader Zim in a robotic shell find him five colour co-ordinated teenagers. With attitude:

Go Go Power Rangers, YOU MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS!

And it is glorious. I don’t think there’s anything more 90s than the Power Ranger intro, a glorious headbanging gateway drug to metal and sick solos that most ikely inspired Dragonforce to be awesome. It’s a signature tune alright, on of hope and fun. And you’d be forgiven for thinking that such an iconic theme would be absent from the grittier and more grounded Power Rangers reboot hitting cinemas next week.

But worry not, fellow 90s children who still yearn for the New Adventures of Johnny Quest to live once again. Because if there’s one part of the original show that does deserve to live again on the big screen, it’s that intro track. And definitely not Shampoo’s Trouble single. That’s the word according to Power Scoop via io9, which picked up on the following image posted to Instagram of a member of London’s Philharmonic Orchestra at a recording session for the soundtrack for Power Rangers:

See that sheet music? That’s the classic theme right there. It’s worth noting then that the Power Rangers track will most likely be more harmonic than metal, but that’s not a bad thing at all, as someone at at io9 remembered that the 1995 feature film also included an orchestral take on the signature tune. And it wasn’t bad at all:

End credits track? Most likely, although the 90s kid inside of me would shriek with delight if Power Rangers ended with the gang obliterating the Putty Squad while a certain guitar solo blared on. Power Rangers is out next year March, and stars Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston and Bill Hader.
