Power Rangers – New looks for Rita Repulsa and a redesigned Alpha-5 revealed

Rita-and-Alpha

It’s the mid-90s, and TV was glorious. Especially if you were a kid. Let’s face it, we had the best of the best then. The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Doug and Reboot to name a few stellar series. But top of the charts for many a week? Power Rangers. Taking the best of the Japanese Super-Sentai series and Americanising it for western audiences, the show was a blast.

Power Rangers has endured for tens of seasons over the years, but it only enjoyed success on the big screen once. That weird Turbo movie doesn’t count, sorry. But the first Power Rangers movie was wonderfully weird stuff. Costumes that were ahead of their time, terribad CGI big robot battles and a villain who was slimier than a politician. Man, my nostalgia is over 9000 right now.

Everything is cyclical however, which currently explains the upcoming reboot. Shinier! Organically techier! Elizabeth Banksier! Because this is one Rita Repulsa who doesn’t look like she spent the last ten thousand years in a dumpster on the moon:

Rita (1)

Rita (2)

I cannot wait to see this incarnation of the cosmic witch hit the cosplay scene. Or the Rangers in the actual movie. While Rita and the Rangers themselves look fantastic so far, one other iconic character looks a bit odd in his redesign (via IGN). Here’s hoping that Alpha-5 doesn’t scream AY-YI-YI-YI-YI! every five seconds:

Alpha 5 (1)

Alpha 5 (2)

Weird huh? Fun fact: Alpha-5 was voiced by Richard Horvitz in the original American series. Yes, the voice of Invader Zim voiced the panicky helper bot. Now try to watch an old Power Rangers episode without imagining Alpha-5 shrieking about doom. Power Rangers is shaping up nicely so far. The first trailer looked surprisingly gritty and reserved, while the look of the Rangers themselves is downright alien.

I dig that. Power Rangers morphs into cinemas next year on March 24 and stars Naomi Scott, Becky G., Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler, Dacre Montgomery, Bill Hader, and Bryan Cranston.

Most of my childhood, when interested in these types of programs was in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Thundercats, Robotech, Ghostbusters, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Bionic six, Dino Riders, etc. Power Ranges were just silly to me when I was a kid.

I still love Robotech. Currently watching the Macross Saga.

Yea. Robotech, Dino Riders, BraveStarr and Thundercats were my poison. Awesome shows, most of which haven’t aged too badly.

Despite everything so far looking as cool as it does, it won’t surprise me if this sucks. However, that being said, I do have hope that it will NOT suck.

I had the same feeling about Jurassic World – ended up loving it. So I’m hoping for the best here.

I think most people were quite pessimistic when Jurrasic World was announced. With the Lost World movies they just rode the whole idea bareback into the ground.

I read the first Lost World, the book. Much better than the movie that sucked.

Didn’t know there were books. Though I was 7 or 8 when he movie came out 😐

Oh yes, I forgot that you are still a baby. Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park as a novel. The movie is the adaptation of that novel. He also wrote Lost World. In both cases, and like in most cases, the books were way better than the actual movie.

Hahaha I’ll have to keep an eye out for the novels then.

You will find that most awesome movies derive from Novels. Michael Crichton also wrote Disclosure, 13th Warrior and Timeline.

Two of those are some of my favourite movies. Have I been living under a damn rock?

I don’t know….Have you? LOL. 13th Warrior and Timeline is damn near impossible to find in book form. I read the draft version of 13th Warrior, and its a little different than the movie, but still very good.

That’s the spirit! It is a dark time in entertainment, where we have to expect everything to suck just so that it doesn’t!

With the new look for Rita, I think it’ll be interesting to see how they work the sixth ranger arc if this does become a film series and we get there. With her new look being predominately green, the introduction of the Green Ranger could have some interesting story elements.

One thing missing that I’d like to see is if Goldar and the rest of the lackeys will be introduced. And of course the most powerful beings in the Power Rangers universe, Bulk and Skull.

They could probably just skip the Green Ranger and go straight to White if need be. I’m more concerned over the theme song. If they omit the crazy guitar shredding zord entrance I will be more than a little upset. More so if they go all dubsteb on it.

Although White was technically part of the ninja era rather than dinos, could be an option.

They already have done a rap version and I think a dub step version for the series. They could do anything at this point.
