PayPal blocks UnoTelly payments

We here at Lazygamer love the heck out of Unotelly. It’s one of a number of DNS routing unblocking service that attempt to remove the geographical fences that stop us from watching, listening to or reading content online that’s supposed to stay confined to a particular region.

It’s not particularly expensive, running $5 a month, but opens up a world of content that would otherwise be unavailable. And up until now, it’s been dead easy to pay for; credit card or for those who prefer a bit of online security as a go-between, Paypal.

Earlier this week though, Paypal has blocked Unotelly from receiving payments. We got this in an email.

“On February 3rd, 2016, Paypal has severed payment processing agreement unilaterally and without prior warning. Paypal indicated that UnoTelly is not allowed to provide services that enable open and unrestricted Internet access.

As result, UnoTelly can no longer accept payment from Paypal. This development is outside of our control, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

If you believe in an open Internet and value the services UnoTelly is providing, we hope you would continue your subscription by updating your payment method from Paypal to credit card.”

For those who do appreciate an online and open internet, this is obviously the start of a worrying trend. While it is easy enough to use a credit card to pay for Unotelly, many would prefer something that isn’t as vulnerable to jerks on the internet.

Whether Paypal is doing this because of increased pressure from companies like Netflix and Hulu, or even from TV and cable companies is yet to be seen – but I don’t like it either way.

I wonder who put pressure on Paypal to do that, because I doubt they just woke up and decided to do this. Someone must’ve threatened to sue them if they didn’t.

My guess big billionaire investors like Carl Icahn is pushing both for Netflix to ensure region blocking and this Paypal move.

Icahn owns huge stakes in Paypal, Netflix, Time Warner etc

Honestly, if they want people to stop doing this, stop offering this kak Netflix package that they are for SA.

They usually don’t, and they are far more secure than using a credit card.

Yes, it sucks that people can no longer use paypal but let’s be honest. If something is created for specific regions due to legal limitations are we really allowed to complain? I know it seems stupid (I agree region locking is) but legally… Are we so careless and demanding that we’d demand open access to everything simply because we want it regardless of the laws around it?

Which is why Steam is such a screwup now that they don’t have PayPal on there anymore since they switched to Rand.

Really? I don’t see it as such. I see it as fairly standard. Especially considering it helps keep my stuff a little safer

Agreed. I just don’t always have my card on me when I’ve just woken up and found something on Steam I like 😛
I’ve also bought less on Steam, so I suppose it’s not a bad thing then.

You can remember the locations of enemy strongholds, hidden gems you need to come back for after getting a certain gadget, stat points needed to achieve a specific build, stats of all the weapons in any game you have ever played, but you can’t remember your CC details by heart??????

I recently got a new card (6 months ago recent). :/
Fine. I should know it. I know. But I literally only use it on Steam online.

I think you are absolutely correct here. this is a complicated legal issue and I agree that if these unblocking services not above board then I’m afraid it makes sense. I think too many people who don’t truly understand the legalities and complexities of the issue are complaining about this. But the law must keep you safe, that part is fine. So let me watch “orange is the new black” illegally over the internet BUT please keep my personal interests safe and secure at the same time.

It’s a pity to see a company founded by the likes of Elon Musk (who most certainly would not want restricted internet access) take a stance like this.

      Yea man.
Though since they put the young Anakin in at the end of Episode VI, anything is possible in my eyes.
