Monday Box Office Report – Doctor Strange conjures up a huge US opening

Stephen Strange: He’s already an MD, a PHD and the Sorcerer Supreme (can’t forgot that one), and now he can also add “Box Office Champion” (BOC?) to his list of achievements. With 90% on RottenTomatoes and a lot of fan love as well, Marvel’s Doctor Strange has been a magical critical success, and that success has translated into one hell of a domestic opening. The supernatural superhero movie debuted in the top spot in the US this weekend past, conjuring a massive $84.9 million. This is of course to go with the $240.4 million it has already made on the international markets where it opened two weeks ago; meaning in total it’s already almost doubled its $165 million production budget!

On the rankings of domestic openings for the 14 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange finds itself just a fraction behind Thor: The Dark World at 10th, but besting Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and The Incredible Hulk. That may seem like a less than stellar stat, but that’s actually pretty impressive for the non-sequel debut of a reasonably unknown character.

But if trippy, psychedelic superheroics was not Americans’ thing, they had another two diverse new offerings to also choose from. And they really could not be more different. Dreamworks’ Trolls, a CG animated film about the frazzle haired dolls from yesteryear, managed to (somehow) have a solid opening despite their subject matter not having been popular in the last decade and more. Maybe thank the voice acting talents of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick for that one. Either way, the movie has trolled its way to $45.6 million, which is nothing to sneeze at when you add the $104 million it has already made overseas.

The last new opener is essentially Exhibit A in the case to prove that even if you’re a raving, drunken racist, if you’re a talented enough filmmaker Hollywood will still listen. Eventually. Yes, after being essentially declared a social pariah for his much publicized tirades, Mel Gibson is hacking his way back into elite Hollywood circles again and leading his charge is factual WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge featuring Andrew Garfield in a reported powerhouse performance. With 87% on RottenTomatoes and the label of “major awards contender” being thrown around, Gibson is certainly getting the critical love again. It wasn’t quite the same commercially though, as the movie opened to $14.75 million. Now with just a $40 million price tag, and given the movie’s adult skewing R-rated nature, this debut is actually fine. Especially since strong of word of mouth and a run up towards the awards season will surely mean that this one will keep making money for a while still.

Meanwhile Inferno‘s epic flame-out continues, as the latest Dan Brown adaptation from director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks could only scrape up $6.25 million in its second week. Standing at $26 million, its total domestic earnings in two weeks has still not managed to beat what The Da Vinci Code earned in its opening day alone. Ouch. In more positive news, Finding Dory is still making money somewhere in the world, with the $1.8 million it brought in this weekend past being enough to push it to $1.024 billion. That’s just enough to surpass Zootopia and its $1.023 billion, officially making Finding Dory the second highest grossing movie of 2016 globally behind Captain America: Civil War.

Hacksaw Ridge is something I will definitely watch. Dr Strange looks cool but one of those that will give me a headache. That Boo! nonsense will make my peepers bleed. Trolls – I don’t have diaper demons so Nope, spank you. Accountant was cool, but not worth a cinema ticket. Inferno can wait for TV. Jack Reacher – Tom Cruise, so nope nope nope. Ouija seems like something my evil better half would like. Girl on the train – yikes nope. The peculiar little monsters one – wait for TV
