We all suspected and hoped it would happen, but I think it’s now safe to say that Iron Man, Captain America and the rest of the Avengers will in fact be getting hooked on a feeling in 2018! While director James Gunn has already confirmed that his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will in fact not be seeing his outer-space band of misfits crossing over with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it only made sense that they would show up in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War. After all, that film is supposed to see all our heroes go up against Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet, and you can’t have a cosmic level threat without some cosmic swashbucklers in the form of Star-Lord on his crew.

And over the weekend Vin Diesel, who voices the fan-favourite tree-like Groot in Guardians, officially confirmed it when he announced during a live Facebook video chat that “The Guardians will be included in Avengers: Infinity War. And that’s incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting.” Indeed.

Meanwhile, the Russos have been doing the press rounds and spoke to CinemaBlend about Avengers: Infinity War – specifically about how it and the already scheduled fourth Avengers movies will no longer be titled Avengers: Infinity War – Part I and Part II respectively.

“We wanted the movie to be very different and distinctive, you know. There’s certainly cross-pollination between characters and some story-arcs, but you know, the first movie is very clearly Avengers: Infinity War and, in time, we will reveal what the second film is.”

And how much time would that be? Not soon apparently.

“You’ll learn that, but not for quite some time.”

Ok, so they can’t really tell us anything about the untitled Avengers 4, but Anthony Russo was able to chat to IGN about the massive significance of Infinity War and its sequel to the MCU, and how it will also give the opportunity to introduce new elements much like the Russos did with Black Panther and Spider-Man on Captain America: Civil War.

“I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU since the very first Iron Man movie. In being a culmination, these movies are in some ways going to be an end to certain things, and in some ways, they’re going to be the beginning of certain things.”

There’s been many a rumour going around about what Marvel’s Phase 4 could look like – the most obvious being that Chris Evans’ Captain America passes on his shield to either Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier or Anthony Mackie’s Falcon just like in the comics. Robert Downey Jr has also been hinting for a while that at 51 years of age he may be getting too old for this, and there there’s Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel that still has to be added into the mix.

All of those things and more could be setup in the two upcoming Avengers movies, but the Russos are cognizant of not just using these movies as springboards for whats to come (a necessary evil of shared universe storytelling, it seems), but also making sure you balance it out with a self-contained story.

“It’s a little bit of both, because you always have to make sure that your choices feel organic to the storytelling, and really, you have to sort of structure them in the way that they need to be there. You have to have them, or they shouldn’t be in the movie. It’s a little bit of a dance between the two, where you have big eyes, and you want everybody included in the movie, but you have to go through the process of… what’s the best story that you can tell.”

Civil War already showed that the directing duo know how to get that balancing act right. Now they just have to do it again on an unprecedented scale.

Vin Diesel, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper will return in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 on May 5, 2017, while Avengers: Infinity War releases on May 4, 2018, and the untitled Avengers 4 will debut on May 3, 2019.

Just keep that hack-of-a-writer, Bendis far away from the script. He’s already ruined Marvel comics. Don’t let him ruin the Marvel cinematic universe too.
