Looks like another name has to be scratched off of the list of available Jaeger pilots, as Gypsy Danger 2.0 won’t have Charlie Hunnam co-piloting it in Pacific Rim 2. While Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro promised that most of the original cast would be back for the sequel which Stephen DeKnight will be helming, looks like Hunnam’s role as the lead protagonist will belong to John Boyega.
And that might just be one hell of an upgrade as Hunnam focuses on helping Guy Ritchie create a shared movie universe for King Arthur and his pals of the round table. “I’m very excited about it. I’m glad they’re making it, and I think it’s going to be great,” Hunnam said to Yahoo Movies.
I read an early draft of what they’re doing, and there was one incarnation of this sequel that involved me heavily, but I was unavailable. They have a very definite schedule that they have to film because of the politics and business surrounding filmmaking. Sometimes non-creative decisions will dictate how something unfolds, which seems ass backwards in fact that we’re making art…(laughs) or at least aspiring to make art.
But yeah, it just ended up being, unfortunately, something that we couldn’t remedy because by the time they got their schedule fully realized, I wasn’t available. But I think they’re onto something very exciting. I think it’s a serious, significant progression which you always hope it will be, right? That you don’t just rest on your laurels and do what you’ve already done again. It feels like they’re really aspiring to push this thing forward and do something original with the sequel, so it’s cool.
It’s a bit of a bummer, but the addition of Boyega leading the cast as the son of Stacker Pentecost should help give this sequel its own identity. Hopefully Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman will be seen in the sequel, as I’m dead certain that Pacific Rim 2 will be titled “The search fir Hannibal’s goddamn shoe”. The clip-emptying sequel is out February 23 in 2018.

I have a question: Does this movie need a sequel? It was a fun movie, Giant robots battling giant-er aliens, with some other fluff in between. Wow. But a sequel?
I think poor sequels can damage a beloved movie.

Yeah and there are so many examples of poor sequels and very few of equals to the sequels.
