Captain America: Civil War may not be worthwhile on BluRay if you’ve already seen it

I don’t pretend to be a film critic to anyone other than my close family, which is why this isn’t a review of Captain America: Civil War. If you want to read a review of the actual film, I leave that in the ridiculously talented and capable hands on Kervyn and you can read his words over here. I will, however, say that I found the plot holes a bit more irritating that Kervyn seemed to, but it was all worthwhile for the epic fight scene. This isn’t about the content of the film though – you might have already seen it in the theaters – this is all about what makes the Blu-Ray worthwhile… or not.

First up, let’s talk about transfer quality. I’m always concerned with the Blu-Ray transfer for titles that were built for 3D viewing like the films in the Marvel cinematic universe. Transferring that to a crisp, high resolution film for home audiences hasn’t always gone well, but this instance was very well done. It was particularly noticeable as all the nuances of the various costumes were detailed and portrayed in excellent 1080p.

The sound quality was a bit more uneven. At the start, it seemed a bit unbalanced as I found myself trying to tweak levels to make it sound right – the explosions, car chases and other action sequences just didn’t have enough depth to them. However, as the film progressed, it thankfully improved and by the time the big, climactic fight scenes were taking place, the sound quality was excellent.

Greatly appreciated for those who need it, the BluRay includes subtitles and descriptive options for the visually or hearing impaired.

So what else is on the disc? Watching the film is pretty much the same as in the cinema, so the Blu-Ray has to offer something extra, and it does so in a few ways.

First up, there are a variety of featurettes. These include a closer look at the making of the movie, as well as the character arcs of Captain America and Iron Man. Those character profiles are interesting, particularly if you haven’t seen all the movies so far in the Marvel universe. They help to explain how the characters have evolved through their different films, the conflicts that they’ve had and how it ended up making sense for them to choose the different sides in the Avengers’ Civil War.

The last featurette actually focuses on upcoming film, Doctor Strange. It gives some interesting glimpses behind the scenes of the movie, showing some on-location filming as well as a variety of concept art. While most of the actual footage is the same stuff we’ve seen in the trailer so far, there were some interesting elements where the creators talk about how this film fits into the greater cinematic universe that Marvel is creating.

The deleted scenes didn’t really do much for me – there was nothing in them that added anything to the characters or the story. I guess that’s a good thing, though, as it simply proves how good an editing job was done with the original movie that they didn’t need to show a plethora of extra scenes for it all to make sense. As for things that were cut, the gag reel is a lot of fun to watch; I wouldn’t necessarily watch it more than once, but it was certainly entertaining to see how the actors have fun with each other on set.

I am glad to have this Blu-Ray as part of my collection, but I’m not overly impressed with the extras. If you are a fan of the Marvel movies, you will want to own this. If, however, you are satisfied once you have seen the movie once or twice, I’m not convinced that the Blu-Ray adds that much extra value.

Iron Man 1 was the only good Iron Man movie. He was awesome in the first Avengers movie though. Can’t remember much about him in the second, actually.

Well, Blu-Ray and DVD is pretty much dead these days with digital. Sure, it’s nice to own those favourite movies, but things have changed so much.

Sucky movie anyways. They really try too hard to keep a story line going, where there isn’t one. Everything seems forced.
