What a let down Gamescom 2014 was

Due to being taken to court by someone I have absolutely no respect for, I wasn’t able to attend Gamescom this year which left me feeling sad and depressed on my multimillion dollar yacht that I bought with the Activision bribe money I keep on being accused of taking.

So while I wasn’t there I sat down with great excitement on Monday when our teams first interviews were happening, eagerly awaiting some absolutely fantastic news to explode out of Gamescom. I mean Microsoft needs to pull out some great exclusives to bring some love back to their platform and Sony surely weren’t going to sit back and allow Microsoft to make up the ground so soon in the race.

The week started well with the news that the next Skylanders for the iPad was going to be shipped with a controller and the game is going to be a solid experience on the iPad for once. And then we had the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer reveal which definitely wasn’t bad but a Call of Duty MP reveal happens every year at Gamescom so this wasn’t something that we didn’t all know was already happening.

The main conferences were on the Tuesday and neither Microsoft nor Sony revealed anything that I was blown away with. Sony’s conference appeared to be a pure indie fest with no mentions of new AAA IP, price cuts, PS Vita or new services that would make me grab a PS4.

The Xbox conference revealed that Tomb Raider was going to be a timed exclusive (or maybe permanent exclusive) which got social media going but after that we once again didn’t really see anything ground-breaking.

EA was up next and showcased nothing.. seriously I don’t remember anything unexpected at all from the conference and then when our team hit the floor at the conference they started reporting back on some solid hands on experiences and great content but none of the games they played were anything new or surprising.

All in all I think the industry let us all down at Gamescom this year and is definitely making me rethink the business logic of sending a bigger team to Gamescom rather than E3. E3 still appears to be where all the big news is released. But maybe I’m just feeling jaded, let me know what you felt about Gamescom this year and if it lived up to your expectations.

One thing I’m still super excited about though is Destiny, man I need to get back into that game. Also that header image is my poor daughters arm from last week… Sharing is caring and all

Geez she did a good job of breaking that arm.

Also, I agree with the whole disappointment thing, but some good came out of it I guess… right?

What ever. They really pissed me off a while ago already. I joined the kickstarter campaign. Great. They already have my money. “BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! Buy the beta access now and get lifetime access to BLA BLA BLA. Only (what was it?) $30 on top of your pledge to get beta access”

Are you stupid? If you backed during the kickstarter and got a game package for $30 you will have alpha and beta access. The alpha and beta access for $5 are only for new backers that started joining since ~April this year.

Silent Hill was an amazing surprise, but that wasn’t part of Gamescom

Sorry about your daughter’s arm. Looks like she was playing Mortal Kombat or something, because, damn, that’s a bad break.

Playstation had the better show. EA was forgettable. Laughable more like it. Your crew did an awesome job though. They saved me from what would otherwise have been a really sleg week.

I was just thinking the same thing complete let down nothing interesting whatsover even if they didn’t announce new IP’s I would have loved to have seen some more gameplay of all the games that are coming out….Sony for me at lease announced Until Dawn and WIld(whatever that is) and so like few seconds of gameplay of bloodborne…The highlight for me personally was the Silent Hills revel that was pretty badass other than that the whole thing was just like meh…

You have a shocking attitude towards indie game development, for someone who’s actually working in the industry. I’ve seen it several times in your comments on this site.

Haven’t even read that many Gamescom articles to be honest. Looks like your daughter needs to cut back on her Minecraft playing, that’s some serious break to break both the ulna and radius.

So not only is Gavin Selling out to MS and Activision he is exploiting his poor daughter’s injury for commercial gain. Tsk tsk.

On serious note. EINA MOER!!! Hope she gets better soon, think she needs a new gaming PC to help her during this tough times.

LOL, I know. If mine isn’t extorting more Lego (blocks and games) out of me he is cracking his skull, putting a gardening implement through his foot or contracting the latest exotic virus only seen before in the Plague games. If he ever learns self preservation I know a couple of doctors who will need to downgrade from their luxury German made cars.

I wouldn’t say it was a let down, it’s just there wasn’t anything new & exciting – just more of what we already knew really. Was at least more interesting than E3. The whole TR thing was a fun diversion.

I agree, sony indie crap .. i mean games .. 90% of the show? Yet maybe only 10-20% gamers even download them (many will not even play them). I think I will skip gamescom next year. E3 was much much better

Damn man, when she breaks her body she certainly doesn’t mess about. I really have enjoyed watching the team roam about and the coverage has been flipping sterling. I know it costs a boat load but to me this adds to much to the site. I just wish Geoff was able to shave off Martha’s hair while it was asleep on her head.

Gavin you must have missed Bioware’s new IP then cause that was new and while not unexpected (plenty of pre-show teasers) we knew nothing about it.

But apart from that I do agree.

But isn’t it a general rule the most boring conferences is the year after next-gen release since they advertise all the games for the next year+ to sell the consoles day one.

I don’t know Gavin, maybe your expectations are just too high for these shows? Sony showed a new Bloodborne gameplay trailer, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, The Tomorrow Children, Volume, Hollowpoint, Runemaster announcement, Day Z for PS4, Hellblade by Ninja Theory, a new and rather beautiful Rime trailer, more Destiny and Far Cry 4, more Shadow of Mordor, P.T./Silent Hills playable teaser, the new 2.0 system software, PS Now in EU in 2015, PS TV in PAL territories, Until Dawn, Tearaway Unfolded (has ~50% more+new content than Tearaway vita) and Alienation from Housemarquee, Driveclub’s weather, new The Order footage (Tesla’s Lab), some new Everyone’s gone to the Rapture stuff and the Wild reveal…um, am I missing anything else?

To me, there’s plenty of AAA titles mixed in with AA A and indie titles. The fluidity of Sony’s show left something to be desired though, it was basically just throwing game after game after game in your face. I was pretty pleased with the show myself. That’s like 20 something games, more than half are AAA, with a chunk of them being released in the next 6 months.
