Attraction academy

We had a wealth of responses to rAge this year. For as many people who attended, you will get as many and varied opinions, something evidenced in our staff post with all our views. It’s a gaming expo for families, adults and everything in between, and it has grown to include all manner of geeky awesomeness including fantastic cosplay and a really cool flea market. However, one exhibitor grabbed some attention this weekend and maybe for unexpected reasons.

The Attraction Academy had a stand at rAge. It quickly grabbed attention from male and female gamers alike wondering what it was all about. If you check out their site, they explain that it isn’t about teaching pick up lines, but that they seek to teach the tools and skills men need to approach, connect with and develop attraction with women. As such, they say that  numbers game and seduction science manipulation traditionally employed by pick up artists isn’t quite applicable (even though that’s really exactly what it is), but they do make some rather specific promises.

With our extensive experience and after being mentored and trained by the worlds number 1 Attraction Specialist and Dating Coach, our theoretical seminars and practical training courses are designed to increase your confidence and assist you in meeting, connect with, attract, building lasting relationships and dating exceptionally beautiful and high- quality women.

[…] What makes The Attraction Academy unique is that we teach ‘Natural Game’; which allows our students to reach levels of success with women without using generic pick up lines. Instead, you will develop an underlying understanding of the female psyche, which allows the women to become deeply attracted to the best version of yourself.

Despite my profound disgust at the phrasing surrounding “exceptionally beautiful and high-quality women” (as compared to all those low-quality women?), the site does say that it’s not about using lines but rather becoming a best version of yourself. It even goes so far as saying that this will improve overall confidence, helping men to improve their business abilities and social life in general. All of that does, indeed, sound great for anyone. There are enough people in this world who need help with social skills, and self-help gurus can help some of them. In fact, they are even looking at making a master class for ladies, although there are apparently some issues around societal expectations that need to be overcome – don’t worry, I’m not touching that aspect of this situation with a ten-foot pole.

However, my objection about the presence of The Attraction Academy at rAge is two-fold. First, I find their sales pitch, tone and phrasing to be rather offensive towards women; it’s predatorial, misogynistic and pretty damned creepy. Second, I don’t feel that they belonged at rAge. I’m not going to go into too much depth on the first point because that is purely a personal thing, but I will let you listen to a sample chapter from one of their master classes. The psychology behind it is sound, but the phrasing of it makes it sound like the men are fooling women into agreeing to a first date and manipulating them into getting further. Again, the psychology is sound and is similarly often used in marketing and sales guides, but the tone makes my skin crawl.

During rAge, Sam from Tech Girl and I went to go chat to The Attraction Academy about what they offer and why they were at the expo. You can hear that chat over on our podcast, here. To be clear, I have no problem with people meeting up for casual sexual encounters if that’s what both parties are after. What does distress me is for someone to sell their CD based on the prospect of getting more sex with any and every woman, which is exactly what I heard in the sales pitch to the young man talking to Ryan before the podcast began. This kind of pitch feels predatory to me, either selling a false promise to the young man buying the CD, or promoting disingenuous encounters with women if you follow their techniques.

The most disturbing part of their presence at rAge was how it played on the stereotypes of gamers as being primarily straight male, socially under-skilled cretins who need to be taught how talk to women and get laid. Sure, there are plenty of men and women who fit into the stereotype of being in need of some lessons in social interaction and (based on the smell in the Dome) hygiene. However, there are also plenty of people who play video games who have social skills and have already found meaningful relationships with partners.

I’m going to assume that the guys from The Attraction Academy are unaware of the changes going on in the gaming industry, that they simply didn’t know that people are more aware of the cisheteronormative issues in stereotypes and all the hard work that gamers, developers and media have done to change perceptions about gamers and gaming. However, I can’t imagine that the rAge organizers are unaware of the industry, which is why I reached out to Michael James, the Senior Project Manager and general head honcho for rAge, to ask him about their inclusion in the expo.

What sort of criteria do you have for inviting or allowing companies or services to exhibit at rAge?

Just to clarify, we don’t invite exhibitors to be at the expo – they make an enquiry to exhibit and pay to be there. We don’t allow alcohol or cigarette sales, nor do we allow sexually explicit content that is rated 18+.

Why was the Attraction Academy allowed/invited to rAge 2015?

When they made an enquiry to be an exhibitor at rAge we checked that their content didn’t contravene any of the criteria I mentioned above. We asked them about the suitability of their material and reminded them that rAge is a family show, and all their answers satisfied me with regards to what they would be displaying at their booth.

He goes on to explain that rAge is definitely still a family show and that they even host organizations like the FPB to show their commitment to protecting kids while gaming continues to grow. He believes that companies like The Attraction Academy might even help improve the way people treat each other online and off.

It’s always easy to jump on these things and look for the negatives, but consider the scenario where just one person who might have previously and thoughtlessly made an inappropriate comment to women online now won’t, because he was informed that behaving like that isn’t right.

Also, for clarification’s sake, Sam and I were incorrect in our numbers of female attendees at rAge. According to Michael James, the rAge audience is closer to 60% male. While I’m sure he has a better sense of his demographic than either of us do, I think some of you could agree with our estimates based on the sheer number of women and couples visible at rAge, and I’m curious how the demographic would shift if it includes or excludes those who attend the LAN.

I understand where the rAge organizers are coming from. There is nothing explicit in the marketing material on show from The Attraction Academy, and I suppose as long as they applied and paid whatever it cost to have their stand, that’s about it as far as the organizers are concerned. However, it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It perpetuates the very same stereotypes that gamers of all walks of life are seeking to change, plus I can’t imagine that any women who saw the stand felt particularly comfortable as a result.

Companies are welcome to market themselves in whatever venues and ways that they think will be most worthwhile, and I’m sure they had a rather successful weekend at rAge. It just still makes my skin crawl; both as a woman, and as a gamer.

Well, from a pure business perspective, perhaps they saw a gap and made some good money there. Assuming the stereotype male gamer, struggling to talk to the cheerleader is true. Hey, maybe he should use the money he was going to use to buy the new guitar her wanted to help fix her car, to get in her good books and try and get closer to her. (You can’t buy me love, 80’s movie). Yeah.

Is this about building self confidence and becoming a better you OR is this about supposedly plowing (Plough, Geralt) through as many men and womand as possible because you are now your “best” you?

I am all about self improvement and I read books on that topic. I know how important it is to be the “best” you and how emotion and self doubt can eat that away and take your confidence. I know that many people, myself included, slip from time to time and need to learn to in touch with themselves, know themselves and accept themselves (is you bum too big? or whatever). This is an important topic and should never be dismissed. These chaps seem to be trying to to sell self help so you can get laid. Yay.

Finishing school, anyone? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finishing_school) – and yes, it can be construed as a terrible pun.)

No problem with self help and building self confidence but this doesn’t feel like it’s the same to me. It just feels seedy. I’m basing this purely on the posters and the general vibe I get from them obv, and don’t have any info really about the course content, but ja…

If it’s really just a “Do X and Y and the ladies will love you” kind of a course then it’s not really building confidence or accepting who you are, it’s just teaching you that who you are is not what women are looking for and you need to project someone else in order to be accepted. That’s kinda the opposite of learning to better / accept yourself surely?

I do not think they are about building confidence or self help. In order to achieve their stated goal, they would need to do a bit of that, but the reason for doing is not, in my book, kosher.

I wanted to make a point about our human frailties and weakness’s and how we need to build on them and never stop. I know this for a fact.

It is not the same and the long term result will, in all likelihood, be worse than if no intervention was done, as you pointed out “That’s kinda the opposite of learning to better / accept yourself surely?”

Years ago, these extremely young ladies came and sat with my friend and myself in a bar. It was very cold, we were sitting under the aircon. One of them, to break the ice (yes, yes) says it is extremely cold here. So my friend points to me and says it is just his personality.

So I sat and stared and did not say a word to them. They left eventually. Ice cool. Meeting woman is one thing, but school girls in a bar, late at night? I don’t see why they’d be there because they don’t seem to have anything to do with gaming or general geeky nature, for want of a better term, of the event.

“allows the women to become deeply attracted to the best version of yourself” – I’ve met me, this seems implausible.
    “exceptionally beautiful and high-quality women” – are they also free-range & grain-fed?

People need to realise most self-help “gurus” do exactly that, help themselves – at your expense.

I love meat. I once spent an hour trying to convince the canned lion activist that having more lions in existence was essential for keeping a good breading stock and if they banned canned lion hunting it was actually detrimental to lions everywhere else. (And for all I know this may in fact be true, you can’t argue with the logic, I also had an hour to kill between appointments.) So vegetarians don’t scare me. Most of the meat I eat is vegetarian and you are what you eat.

So… “Not Quite” Pick-up artistry is now a thing at rAge?
The biggest problem with this sort of stuff is that different people interpret it differently.
The overt kid who doesnt get out much or doesnt have the ability to socialize with that one girl he’s always fancied will see it as a tool of getting closer to her.
The jock boy will see it as a tool to get into her pants, and her friends pants, and her friends cousins pants, and so on and so forth.

While it can technically be seen as a good idea… lets be honest here… those dudes were there to capitalize off of the stereotype of the unpopular, awkward and shy gamer kid.

Of course women don’t have brains. NOT giving them a yes or no choice would completely blindside them, as they are only capable of seeing those two options. They had a whole 8 hour documentary about this on the Discovery Channel the other night in 1952. It’s also a well-known fact that women prefer to stand close to the oven to keep their feet warm while they cook for the family. This shows gratitude….

This is very tasteless. When you post objective views on the nature of society and look at the mitigating factors, This is a clear attempt at exploiting a market that has preconceived ideas surrounding it. These folks are playing on the Idea that Rage will be a bastion of virginity and insecurity and think they are tapping into a lucrative market.

Either a masterstroke in marketing from them or just a flash in the pan. Your article is giving them more “press” and exposure. In a way, It is a win win situation that this exhibit finds itself in. This has no place in a event like Rage.

I guess rage itself needs to ensure they fill a quota of stands in order to meets their financial needs and this was a no-brainer. Maybe a cautionary tale for future Rage events. But clearly a bad Idea.

Personally I think it is tasteless but not in the degree to warrant it getting any attention at all a bit of a mountain over a mole hill. I did write a wall of text over at Llews blog regarding this. But then again who am I to judge how others feel.

Personally I don’t think we (Edit: Gamers not this website) should be seen as pressuring rAge to ban people like this. I don’t care much about what they are offering but from what I understand it isn’t illegal and it isn’t pushing women into doing anything they don’t freely choose to do.

Yes I, and others, may find it distasteful to fake who you are to land someone in bed or a relationship but if you really want to bang a drum, about deception we could start talking about makeup, hair dye, clothes that shape your body, fragrances, all girl magazines (how to please your man etc…) and anything that someone does to make themselves more appealing to their preferred partners.

I walked past their stand with my 2 daughters and didn’t worry about it, They aren’t taking away the family friendly vibe and if rAge were going to crack down on something I’d rather it be the horrific language of people in the center and crowding of the doors by smokers. Those things made me worry about my children far more than 2 guys who think they’ve solved the mystery of relationships.

It’s not quite selling sex though – it’s selling confidence and dates. I think we automatically jump to the worst possible outcome and then latch onto it – that’s what I’m saying has happened here. Perhaps the same thing with the Roxy mascot, tbh. And yes, I’m as guilty as the next person regarding this. Gavin almost always brings about some perspective, which makes me at least stop and think about my reaction. Sometimes I’ll still disagree, but often Gavin is bang on the mark. Just in my experience and dealings with him.

Scew it. I disagree with you. I firmly believe that any business owner puts the need to protect their interest above all else. It is to the detriment of humanity that our lives are governed by this. ” This is an opinion piece by the author indicated and does not represent the views of the publication or its staff.” This serves to affirm my view.

While you say you it’s massively offensive to imply you would throw staff under a bus, I think that this disclaimer serves to protect you from having to do so as you take no responsibility for what someone you employ says. This website constantly pursues controversial topics but hides behind a disclaimer . Your image is more important than common sense.

I personally think that the second you felt the need to have to put a disclaimer on the article, You did exactly what you imply you won’t ever do.

            The disclaimer is automated.

Funny thing, it was put there to protect the writers from my over the top editorials because they were all being painted with the same brush and I thought it was important that people know that everyone here is unique and has their own opinion.

Maybe it would change your mind knowing that my main income comes from my fulltime job and this is a work of passion and not a need for money?

          • Darren Peach

            October 14, 2015 at 08:48

Automated. Unless you think I am a stupid log, I sincerely doubt that saying something is automated is a respectable or valid response. In fact, I would argue that the Idea of something being automated further validates my point.

But, Let us get down do the real issue at hand. Being somewhat independent in nature, I tend not to follow mainstream trends and I Ideas. Being BI-Polar has enlightened me to the true nature of people. The initial point of the article raised what I consider to be a very valid concern about exploitation based on preconceived Ideas.

Most readers seemed to agree with this idea. It’s the kind of debate that has merit. But, Then you post a opinion which undermines rational sentiment and further antagonise through another post in which you imply that those that disagree with you need to check themselves or get a grip.

While there is most definitely a younger less savvy ( inexperienced) demographic portion of you user base that might agree with your post by default, There are also those who are far more experienced by comparison who would wholeheartedly disagree with your somewhat heavy handed approach. It serves to isolate those who disagree with you and makes one feel uncomfortable. But, Being part of a demographic that is considered unsavory by the mainstream has thickened my skin to the point that I see BS straight away. And I call everything you have said complete and utter BS.

The disclaimer is added when an article is tagged as an editorial. I don’t see how that validates or invalidates the point at all. It’s just a fact, same as we automate disclaimers on sponsored posts and event posting. ANYWAY…

” The initial point of the article raised what I consider to be a very valid concern about exploitation based on preconceived Ideas.”

Exploitation of what though? The ladies who will be targetted by people using the service or gamers who are being targetted and a possible clientelle for the service?

For the first one I don’t see ladies as damsels in distress who need protecting, they are just as capable of deciding for themselves if the person they are talking to is really interested in them as people or for sexual use only. Is it underhanded to use the ‘skills’ these guys teach? I absolutely think so. But my moral compass is mine alone and I don’t feel the need to impose it on others.

If your worries about the second part, where gamers are being targetted because they are stereotyped as nerds who need help then I don’t see the problem at all., If the targeting is incorrect then the company’s marketing will fail. if it succeeds then maybe there is some merit in the stereotype. Either way it doesn’t hurt you or anyone else who isn’t the stereotype.

They are offering a service, not forcing you or anyone to do anything.

The recent trend to be hysterical about anything that someone doesn’t personally agree with doesn’t sit well with me.

Here is a Idea, How about taking mental health and making it a worthy
debate ? Sick of seeing mainstream society never even bother with it.
Gamer-gate, Misogyny, Sexism, Race and exploitation are hot topics. But
no-one has ever ventured into the world of the impact modern mental
illness, The discrimination that those who are afflicted with it are
            subject to.

Wonder how many of your readers are too scared too be
open about it ? So, Every time you post a article about the lack of
transformation in games, You slap a great many people in the face. But,
To be honest, I doubt any one of your writers give a damn. These topics
you post are pseudo issues compared to the stigma that those who are
afflicted with serious mental health issue. God damn arrogant that your

You haven’t addressed that. By your logic EVERYTHING is permitted at a gaming expo simply because an application is made? That’s silly.

If they saw the gaming market as a market to advertise to then good for them. They paid the same money as others to get a stand to market to us, if we allow massage machines then we surely have to allow this?

But that’s us. I know at least 2 people in my very small network of colleagues and old friends and acquaintences who’d sign up for this on the spot.

The problem with gamers is that they expect to get gamer girlfriends. Metalheads hope for metal girlfriends etc. Newsflash, the girl you get might just let you forget about your hobby for a very long time, and once married the hobby can get in the way of your time together, I know from personal experience. Trying to sleep with every girl is just a bad idea, just wait and see how unplanned pregnancy messes up your gaming time friends. That all being said, i suppose all I really want to say is yes, every geek can get a great girl. Just at least try guys, but not like that, its cheap

No, as a straight, white male ( because all 3 of those offend someone somewhere ) – I can honestly say that I ( my opinion ) do not believe this is the type of stand that should be at rAge – maybe on the sidewalk outside of a club somewhere – but it has so little to do with nerds/geeks and their hobbies specifically.

Also, after listening to the clip, I actually think the appropriate place to advertise might be on porno websites ( I think it might be a better target audience as well )
    – Think about it – single, shy guy goes for his routine jack and all of a sudden there’s the possibility of being taught how to deal with women – shit, maybe I need to trademark this concept or something :/

Well, is it not because you make the best food? 🙂 Tried that on my wife.

I still reflexively duck when she says my name, though.

I don’t know to tell the truth. I know my friends like my food. I don’t know if he likes my food.
But yeah I don’t think that statement would work on any woman that easily.

A gay person, or someone pretending should have asked these guys if their tips would work catching men.

Those are pretty loose criterias to get in. I would think that some common sense would be employed too…

could not agree more with you. Could not believe when I saw the stand very insulting. RAGE is a celebration all things Gaming and Tech including the people that support it.

I still feel that the organisers of rAge need to be a little more sensitive to the topics currently revolving around the gaming and tech industry. It’s easy to say they aren’t explicit (Which they aren’t) or that they didn’t contravene any of the rules around being allowed to display (They didn’t) but as far as appropriateness? I don’t think it’s appropriate at all.

In the old days when I was in my prime.. A few beers ALWAYS gave me confidence to talk to girls. Now I just look at those guys and pity them..

How hard can it be to say hi to someone and get them to sleep with you? Its so easy on Sims 😉

Man and here I was thinking that the whole pickup thing went back underground o.O…Read “The Game” by Style. Actually tried some of the stuff myself and for most parts it worked but hell nothing beats being yourself. Then I met my wife and all went out the door.

I think these guys saw a gap since us gamers are put in a box and people think we can’t interact with others. Which isn’t the case at all. Agree that they shouldn’t be at the show though but kudos to them for trying at least.
