E3 2013 – The calm

Tomorrow, the biggest gaming event of the year kicks off. There’s going to be one The Rock level crowd of thousands – and thousands! – of journalists and various other trade partners present at the event, meaning that anyone that suffers from enochlophobia is going to be in a gaming-related hell. But before that happens, it’s a quiet day at the LA Convention Centre.

E3 The CAlm (35)E3 The CAlm (36)E3 The CAlm (37)E3 The CAlm (38)E3 The CAlm (39)E3 The CAlm (40)E3 The CAlm (41)E3 The CAlm (42)E3 The CAlm (43)E3 The CAlm (44)E3 The CAlm (45)E3 The CAlm (1)E3 The CAlm (2)E3 The CAlm (3)E3 The CAlm (4)E3 The CAlm (5)E3 The CAlm (6)E3 The CAlm (7)E3 The CAlm (8)E3 The CAlm (9)E3 The CAlm (10)E3 The CAlm (11)E3 The CAlm (12)E3 The CAlm (13)E3 The CAlm (14)E3 The CAlm (15)E3 The CAlm (16)E3 The CAlm (17)E3 The CAlm (18)E3 The CAlm (19)E3 The CAlm (20)E3 The CAlm (21)E3 The CAlm (22)E3 The CAlm (23)E3 The CAlm (24)E3 The CAlm (25)E3 The CAlm (26)E3 The CAlm (27)E3 The CAlm (28)E3 The CAlm (29)E3 The CAlm (30)E3 The CAlm (31)E3 The CAlm (34)E3 The CAlm (32)E3 The CAlm (33)

From Tuesday to Thursday, things kick off in a major way, as the next generation of gaming is revealed. It’s the kind of E3 that only happens once every couple of years. And we’ll be there every step of the way…most of it being myself and Geoff yelling SPERTS at EA and Microsoft.

Yeah like speeding up the gameplay. I loved the first game and played it through twice but when I tried it again recently after purchasing Opposing Front and Tales of Valor it felt painfully slow, admittedly after spending too much time on Starcraft 2 and DOTA 2. I know it’s my perception but I couldn’t play it again.

Ja, my favourite game composer. Moreso than Uematsu-san – which I realise is blasphemy.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:04

Not quite they both amazing composers, Uematsu’s latest work on Last Story is amazing, but I can understand why you rate her higher, Dearly Beloved is one of my favorite themes of all time

            And this —-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SceCRjgPfQc&list=PLD7492B33ACAD8E31

            And Finally this —-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQJIuc5LQKA&list=PLD7492B33ACAD8E31

            Yoko Shimomura is really Amazing

And the most emotional theme ever too (My last youtube post lol) —–> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvJdNHsY0Fs&list=PLD7492B33ACAD8E31

I find Shimomura-san is consistently better. Her music usually invokes the right emotions. Which games from either composer would you say had the best overall soundtracks? I believe FFVIII was Uematsu’s best score.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:23

Indeed, but I think both their works invoke numerous emotions. While I love Final Fantasy 8’s OST, I mean It has awesome tracks such as Only a plank between one and perdition and Legendary beast and though it may be cheesy … YES EYES ON ME is freaking awesome lol But I found 9 to be my favorite, every tune fit perfectly for every single scenario with Rose of May being my favorite … Sorry, I’m an OST geek lol but I can’t decide between the two really 🙁

            June 10, 2013 at 10:14

Man, I would love a remaster of 8’s OST ……. Did you like the Draw system? many people hated that

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:20

I loved the draw system. You need temperance to get anything out of it, otherwise you just get irritated with the grind. I also found junctioning was one of the best growth systems, even if it was broken. Giving Ultimecia the ability to draw your magic added a sense of urgency also. I feel FFVIII gets a lot of flack for it’s brooding, emo protagonist, but I think Squall had brilliant character arcs and grew a lot throughout the game. He was somewhat insufferable in the beginning.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:28

Totally agreed. I loved the draw system too, nothing was more fun than having 99 Ultimas and junctioning that sh*t, massive stat boost lol Was not cool when she drew that though lol Squall is my favorite protaginist of all actually. He showed an extreme amount of growth, much more than any character before. My favorite scene was in Ragnarok when Rhinoa floated to his lap , but he I mean he showed great leadership at the end of disc one when Irvine messed up. But you know, If the ‘Squall is dead’ theory is true, FF 8 has the best story ever made in any game.period

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:31

Kindred spirit! I think so too. There are just too many weird scenes in the final FMV that lead me to believe he died at the end of disc one. Squall did have the most dramatic character growth. Slow to start, but lived up to his namesake by the end of the game.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:37

Exactly….man I get sad every time I think of that theory, but agreed, he lived up to it at the end. Fantastic character, actually most of them are

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:43

I was also really into the whole Rinoa is Ultimecia theory before they officially debunked it.

FFXIII’s story kinda mimics a few Final Fantasy’s don’t you think? Time compression = the release of chaos merging valhalla. Chrono Trigger’s adventurous time travel. Cloud 2.0. Tidus + Yuna/Serah + Snow.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:51

Haha, yeah it was a really good theory yeah.

And Yeah, whenever you delve into time travel, it’s hard to move past Chrono Trigger. But you know, I think SE really messed up with XIII’s story. I mean it has an extremely deep lore with the Fal’cie and Cacoon etc but I don’t think it was ever realized. I wonder if that was due to the linearity of the game.

I agree with Tidus + Yuna/Serah + Snow. lol, only that Yuna was a stronger character. But Serah isn;t all that bad though and Snow was likeable

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 11:02

I couldn’t get past the pedo-bear vibe. He looked 28 and she looked 13. It disgusted me a bit. That and his filler word seems to be ‘SERAH!’ Real sophisticated dialogue there Square-Enix. Right up there with the Star Wars prequels.

As for the lore behind FFXIII, I really do think vs XIII was supposed to come out in the years following, they share a universe, and there are many references to Etro in what little of vs we know. If vs had come out 2 years after XIII, instead of the cash-in sequel XIII-2 (I believe that was a financial necessity, they seemed to be in a bad way at the time), versus would have filled in the gaps that weren’t obvious in XIII.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 11:08

Haha, I never noticed that until someone pointed it out, he is really huge and old and she’s, well yeah. lol. The best scene for me was When Sazh was reunited with Dajh, He was the most believable character.

And yeah, I think that game is moving away from the Fabula Universe, I really wonder if it will be re-branded. Hopefully we will find out soon

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 11:12

Ja, Sazh went from my least favourite character, to one of my top 3. I really thought he was just going to stay a black-stereotyped comic relief character. I wish his DLC had been included on-disc. I couldn’t justify purchasing it for XIII-2.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 11:17

Well maybe if the Ultimate version makes it’s way over here, we can play it, but I again wouldn’t pay that much for those games. And he really did outgrow that stereo type, but not fully , but I liked that about him

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:28

            A fellow OST geek 😀
Journey was great, right??! Man, dat music.
Melodies of life was a bit sub-par, as a main theme. I do think IX had a great soundtrack. I’m not sure why, but there was an overall bittersweet feeling behind the music. Even the world-map track felt kind of melancholy.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:35

In all honesty I have never heard of Austin Wintory before, but hot DAMN! Apotheosis????Da hell is this brilliant music…….lol

Yeah Melodies was a bit weak, but it was a sweet tune that kinda encapsulated Garnet’s personality. The OST was full of up’s and down’s, one minute it’s happy like Steiner’s theme then it’s melancholic like Freya’s theme. What I love about the OST

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:50

I think Journey had the best soundtrack, from a technical standpoint. There was little in the way of story-telling, it was the visual spectacle and the music that drew out emotion. I also hadn’t heard of Wintory before. I’m sure his career has taken off in a big way after Journey.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:53

Totally agree, technically it is bloody good. I think the story is very very abstract and a lot is left to your interpretation Which is a good thing too actually, in an age when everything is in your face. Dark Souls is another example of such story telling

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:58

Yes, again! Demon’s Souls also. I was just thinking that we, as gamers, are so used to having everything explained to us as if we are alzheimic and dumb. I feel that games have lost something by spoonfeeding us. Shadow of the Colossus and Ico are more great examples. SotC also had a super talented composer.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 11:03

How did you find the Soul games OSTs? Seriously I did not know Motoi could compose such tracks!! … I’m used to his Tales and Star Ocean Type compositions, but the Souls games blew it out of the park!!

And yup, we are spoon fed everything and nothing is left up to our own imagination, which is why everyone is fine with cookie cutter stories, it’s as if we forgot how to piece stories together and how to come up with our own conclusions.

Man SotC…..I listen to this song every day —> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWB8P4jbsAA

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 11:09

MOAR GOOSEBUMPS! Yes, SotC is a unique experience for me. Journey came close to capturing the same feeling, but SotC is probably my favourite game experience ever. Nothing has come close to emulating what that game achieved.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 11:19

Which I guess is why so many of us are yearning for The Last Guardian …. I really wana feel that way again man …

Rain seems to be looking promising though don’t you think. Studio Japan has a lot of talent

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 11:28

I am interested in hearing more about it, but after mentioning SotC, it pales in comparison. I embrace the uniqueness of the title, and the open-mindedness behind Sony’s publishing decisions. I’m just longing for another SotC. Even if TLG comes out, I doubt it will give me the same feelings. I think the PS2 will forever remain my golden gaming age.

Fumito Ueda, Kenji Kaido and Kow Otani created something truly spectacular, and criminally underrated.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 11:49

Naa, nothing will ever come close but I do hope that it will make me feel something similar.
What I always found amazing was that the ps2 was much weaker than the new consoles, yet it was able to perfectly host such a magnificent game, just shows the value of artistic direction over raw power

            June 10, 2013 at 10:41

I loved the drawing system man! Nothing says I love you more then having 99 Ultimas junctioned to your Lionheart weapon! Also loved the hidden bosses and the story rocked. What an ENDING too! First game that really made me feel like I was being rewarded after putting 100 hours in!

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:47

Haha, that was the best, 99 Ultima’s and Lionheart, Omega Weapon doesn’t stand a chance! I feel the same way man. was really a brilliant game, I feel more so than 7

          • Argentil

            June 10, 2013 at 10:54

I loved FFVIII, even though Rinoa was a bit insipid and brattish at times, FFVIII = best romance. You either love FFVIII or don’t like it much at all. I think the cast as a group went through the biggest growth I’ve seen since in an FF.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            June 10, 2013 at 10:59

Best Romance evar ! I wished I was in love after that game lol and besides the growth you know, they all gelled well, even freaking Seifer felt natural as part of the cast. The scene where you have to put on a concert shows how well they mixed together.

            June 10, 2013 at 11:07

      Agreed,

I hope it’s nothing like the Xbox DRM, it simply kills used games. I mean who in their right mind will buy a used game, then pay just less than the full price to unlock that title on the Xbone, it would be cheaper to just buy the original.

I don’t mind the pay for an online pass for your used game as per PS3 at the moment, just hope Sony keeps this in mind.
