FFD: What DLC has been worth buying?

Look at my horse, my horse is amazing!

Full blown game expansions are a relic of the past, replaced with bits of micro DLC instead. A mission or two here, some cosmetic upgrades, an extra character or four. It’s all, form the perspective of the consumer at least, set to extract more money for a game than you should be paying. To get a “complete” game, you’re now looking at spending US$90 instead of the US$60 you traditionally have.  For the most part, very little of the DLC, Season Passes or extra content we end up buying actually feels like it’s worth the money we’ve spent.

There are a few exceptions though. Things like Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmares and Oblivion’s Shivering Isles immediately spring to mind. They offered the “expansion” experience for a fair price – back when we paid for things with MS points. BioShock 2’s Minerva’s Den DLC was a condensed, perfectly encapsulated BioShock experience that I thought was better than the game itself. Of course, worthwhile DLC is never discussed without Mass Effect 2’s Lair of the Shadow Broker being brought up; it rose above the heaps of other DLC tat flooded the game from the onset. I suppose that Dragon Age Origins’ Awakening was decent enough, and Mario Kart 8’s DLC is spectacular. Beyond those examples though, I’m struggling to think of DLC that’s actually been worth not just the cost, but even the download.

You tell us though. What DLC have you bought, and actually felt good about afterwards?

The Secret Armoury of General Knoxx even on it’s own was well worth the money , and I can’t say that I felt robbed after grabbing Mass Effect 3 – Citadel DLC.

He was great, his tired commentary while you’re playing was funny.

When he got a birthday card from his boss…”to my special friend on his birthday. Flame on!”

        I haven’t played any ME3 DLC.

On ME3 one need to, at minimum, play the free Extended Cut. Omega and Leviathan are quite fun too.

Honestly, the only DLC I ever bought was Atorias of the Abyss for Dark Souls. SO good, you can’t even access the DLC normally and it’s well hidden inside the game which makes it all the more impressive! Not to mention, Atorias’ story is absolutely amazing, it even made me go back to fight Sif.

Next DLC I’m planning to buy is the Kidman 2-part DLC for The Evil within. Look good and I’ve been itching to jump back into the game, might play it a second time.

Not so sure about that. The last time I checked the developers for Lightening’s bouncing boobs (who are Japanese) were giggling like schoolboys on stage when asked why they included juggle physics. The Japanese market is known to be far more lose when it comes to clothing than the western market. Solid Snake with a soldier female who has few clothes than most night ware models?

lol so true. Sex sells. But I do admire the Japanese gamers for not being so embarrassed about it. Its the violence in games that should be frowned upon, not sexuality. That Mortal Kombat is snuff porn but Lollipop Chainsaw gets bashed.

Destiny’s DLC purchased as part of the special edition , didn’t really hurt especially since we still have one that will be releasing soon, but if I had to purchase the DLC separately I would not have been a happy gamer.
The witcher 3 DLC on promised game time could be good, but the story might fall apart, so I will wait before judging that one.

Don’t know much of the history of the games since I only dabbled in Civ 2 and skipped the rest, but more victory conditions would be nice and diplomacy that feels like it matters. Also an option not to forcibly upgrade my units when an upgrade is available would be nice. If it is already there, I cannot find it 🙁

no, it is not. upgrade of units is a core game mechanic as you get more pure or whatever. Just delay, build a few soliders, than in one swoop upgrade them all to marines and attack bugs!

Pretty much all the DLC from Bioware has been worth it for me, even the smaller ones.

Mass Effect 3 Citadel. I probably spent as much time in the holo fight place as I did playing Mass Effect 3. Wow.

Lair of the Shadow Broker was by far the cleverest integration DLC I have played.

Also, Fallout 3 DLC’s were fantastic. All of them. Added new things, new dimensions. BUT were fun.

Older games, yes Oblivion added a 50% increase to game map, pretty cool.

    New Vegas not so much

    Last of Us: Left Behind
    All of Fallout NV’s DLC
Oblivion’s DLC Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles

To add a few more that other’s have not mentioned:

Heavy Rain: The Taxidermist- pretty much the creepiest mission ever.
    Infamous: first light

    Now to expansion packs:
Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour
Star Wars Galactic Battle Grounds: Clone Campaign
