The Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris return to Destiny in October…with some changes

You’ve dunked the orb in Rift. You’ve introduced numerous faces to dozens of golden bullets, called forth the skill to channel UNLIMITED POOOOOWER from your finger-tips and introduced Guardians to Hammer-time. Destiny’s new Crucible modes are, simply put, bloody good fun.

But like all things in life, you’re missing an old favourite. Favourites such as Destiny’s regular Iron Banner tournament, and the weekend fun of a Trials of Osiris challenge run.

Those Crucible modes have been missing lately, with players getting the hang of Rift and Mayhem instead. Well get ready Guardians. Because they’re coming back.

Destiny’s first year two Iron Banner will kick off on October 13. In year one, the Iron Banner was pretty much the perfect PvP stomping ground in which to earn some Etheric Light to ascend armour and weapon to max levels while showing off your light level. This year however, things are changing according to Bungie:

Destiny_The_Iron_Banner

  • The tempered buff is now automatically applied and continues to grow in effectiveness each day of the event.
  • The alt catch-up buff and Iron Medallion mechanics are unchanged.
  • Potential match completion rewards now include both weapons and armor, matching the same items available from Lord Saladin during each event.
  • Drop rates have been increased and are intended to be the primary source of rewards from Iron Banner. If you don’t get what you’re hoping for, you have the option to visit Lord Saladin instead.
  • Gear purchased from Lord Saladin now requires Legendary Marks instead of Glimmer.
  • New emblems have been added to his inventory.
  • All new bounties including 9 Daily bounties (3 per day) and 3 new Weekly bounties which reward Legendary Marks.
  • Recommended minimum Light for Iron Banner: 230.
  • Only Level 40 Guardians can lead a Fireteam.

That’s some nice tweaking right there. Lord Saladin’s Iron Banner goods were notoriously pricy, but worth it. I’m looking forward to seeing what his year two inventory looks like. As for the Trials of Osiris, here’s what’s cha-cha-changing in that mode:

  • Trials gear will now drop exclusively as end-of-match rewards for winning teams.
  • The more you win, the better those drops will be!
  • There’s no need to return to Brother Vance, all rewards come directly to you.
  • Passage Coins still drop for the losing team. Trials is still about winning, but Coins can help make that easier.
  • Trials Passages now have a Details page containing your active buffs. You won’t be able to add buffs once you’ve started your Trial, so make sure you buy them first!
  • Players that go undefeated on their Passage will continue to be invited to The Lighthouse.
  • Players may continue to play in the Trials past 9 wins (but they won’t get any better gear).
  • Brother Vance now has Trials Bounties available each weekend to provide players with a way to get sweet Trials gear, even if they’re not reaching the Lighthouse.
  • Regular Crucible Bounties are also still valid in Trials.
  • We will attempt to match up teams with similar win counts.
  • If you have 1 win, we will try to match you with another team with only 1 win.
  • If you have 8 wins… yup.
  • If we can’t find a high-quality match, we will loosen the win requirements first (in other words, we will not prioritize “wins” over low-latency matches).
  • Overtime timer in Elimination will now show 0:00 instead of stopping at 0:01 when time expires.
  • Teammate and enemy Revives now have distinct audio cues.
  • Recommended minimum Light for Trials of Osiris: 290.
  • Only Guardians with at least 251 Light can lead a Fireteam.

Trials of Osiris is easily the most challenging of Crucible modes, as an uncoordinated fire-team have little to buggerall chance of achieving the solid nine-win streak needed to go pick up some premium loot on Mercury. Now, those new tweaks are going to make at least some wins rewarding for teams. I like it.

I’m looking forward to a new week of the Iron Banner. Especially if it’s a Mayhem playlist. IT’S HAMMER-TIME!

  1. Trials of Osiris can get into the sea. Seriously. That was put there for PVP elites to feed on the misery of noobs. The gear is just a nice bonus. I’ll look into Iron Banner though. At least that has more of a level playing field being 6v6.

I’m starting to enjoy PVP a bit more though. I think something snapped during the Chaperone Exotic quest and now I have the PVPs version of stockholm syndrome

That’s the madness speaking… 😮 Nah, PVP is fun, but what annoys me is that sometimes, I get paired up with super laggy middle-eastern gamers or South Africans on (presumably) dial-up… or their gran’s 1Mb connection 🙁

I’ve done my fair share of those, best one ever was getting a headshot kill 3 seconds after he sniped me. Good ol’ South African interwebz.

The best: Activate arc hunter super, stab the same guy 4 times, he takes 0 damage, I get killed by shotgun. #SouthAfricanTalesOfWoe

I think I’m going to get the sol edge for the hunter, and then use both for my warlock main. Then it’s just getting the Titan to 40, and then I will dance with THREE SWORDS like a modern samurai! Muahahaha Eat your heart out Raiden!

In other words, noobs will be lead into the arena to be slaughtered by the top teams.

Hence the mercenary problem Destiny has, where people sell their services online to help you win 9 in a row. That’s no fun. Having to resort to such extreme measures
