Destiny: The Taken King – Easy Exotic Engram guide

I got yer Triple-E right here! If you don’t have an Exotic weapon in Destiny, then you’re missing out on some of the best gear available. Exotics aren’t just unique death-dealers, they’re high-end weapons that Bungie has rightfully limited players to having just one equipped at any time.

They’re also hard to find, and about as plentiful as stretchy purple pants that can fit Bruce Banner and not tear when he transforms in to the Incredible Hulk without ripping. Still, some salvation is at hand.

With Xur’s weekly offering costing a quite a few Strange Coins more than usual for a random engram that either is or isn’t what you’re looking for, you’re better off buying something else in his inventory: The Three of Coins. Because those magic coins can get you the goods that you so fervently desire.

The idea behind the Three of coins is simple enough. Pop a coin, and your chances of an Ultra dropping an Exotic Engram are much, much higher now. First off, what is an Ultra?

An Ultra is a proper boss in the game, distinguishable by the yellow health bar that it has. So characters such as Skolas, Crota and Omnigul then. So who’s the best boss for this exploit? Draksis. Here’s a breakdown of the steps to Exotic joy outside of a dodgy massage parlour:

  • Purchase Three of Coins from Xur
  • Start the Scourge of Winter mission, any difficulty
  • Kill everything until you reach the door that opens for the Draksis boss fight
  • Pop a coin
  • If you have a Sniper rifle such as the Icebreaker, now would be a good time to use it. Otherwise, gently walk up until Draksis is in view, and pop him a few shots
  • Now comes the important part: You;re going to need to pop a rocket on Draksis that won’t only take him out, but you as well
  • If Draksis doesn’t drop an engram, just rinse and repeat, and pop another coin. Remember, the effect stacks
  • Kamikaze Draksis again, and within a few tries, you’ll have a shiny new Exotic Engram
  • Remember, only use one coin at a time, as the buff resets every time an Ultra is dropped
  • Enjoy your new Exotics, earned in the blood of Bungie devs who are probably getting ready to hotfix the exploit on Friday

I used that exploit myself, and picked up some rather spiffy gear: The Invective and Fourth Horseman shotguns, the Monte Carlo autorifle, The Telesto fusion rifle and the Crest of Alpha Lupi chest armour.

D armour

Oh yeah, I’m proper stylin’ and profilin’ now! Of course, expect all this to change soon, Bungie’s David “DeeJ” Dague responded on Reddit to how Three of Coins is being used currently:

I was just conferring with the Design Team about how Three of Coins is performing in the wild. It is their assessment, and yours as well, given the context of the dialogue here, that the drop rates are too damn high. For now, this will play in your favor…

You earned those coins. Have fun spending them. The Nine may be delighted that you’re blowing them all now.

As always, thanks for being an outstanding source of feedback and awareness. We like you just fine.

So yeah, if you’re looking for some premium loot, and this method isn’t hot-fixed by Friday, go for it.

So, I bought this over the weekend. Lets say it was a impulse buy. Played it at launch and loved it. Great game. Consumer advice here. To my shock, I had to download a 18 gig patch. Basically I paid R 800 for the game and another R 900 for 20 gigs of data just to accommodate the patch. I know there are uncapped packages on the market but considering the circumstances, I had already opened the game and BT Games would only credit me with a trade in at less than half the value of the game, I bit the bullet and phoned Telkom and asked to be credited with the necessary data. This is the single most expensive game I have had to buy and it was completely unintentional. The consumer is getting railroaded here. Metal Gear expects you to buy coins to play online and you still pay for the PS4 network. This instance was avoidable and probably my fault but the point is the costs are very unfair and highly unethical. Telkom, Who I have always found to be good in terms of service need to change their pricing. As a gamer in a changing medium that requires higher data amounts just to enjoy the online world, The pinch is crazy.

Yeah Darren. Unfortunately the game creator’s aren’t making games with “the poor SA consumers” in mind. Uncapped is the way to go. It might be a couple of rands extra every month, but it’s worth it. Destiny i.m.o is the only game that feels “next gen”. We have had countless convo’s here at the office. We are about 4 guys that love the game, each has a different ISP. With all the “social space / Tower” visits in an 2 – 3 hours sesh chews up around 180 – 250mb. One guy was on LTE, and it was the worst. He would use a 1-2 gigage every weekend, just playing destiny. Cost stacking every time. He has since moved back to uncapped DSL.
More games are going to follow suit. We can only hope costs get better. Economy wise, not looking to happen soon.

Good point. But Bandwidth in SA is far too expensive. I guess it was a unique set of events that left me in a crappy position.

I get download speeds of 5 megabits a second. What sort of speeds do you get with a fixed line ?

I have a 10mb line which runs at around 8.5… It gets the job done.

Wow. That is fairly quick considering. I have heard horror stories about people that get 10 meg lines and get very slow speeds. My main concern are download speeds. With work, I generally have to download files as I work from home and to be honest, LTE has served me well. But if you say 8.5, I am now only beginning to understand why every now and again I run into some kid Who seems to have telepathic ability in COD….

Oh I played the COD beta and it felt like I was in a meat grinder!!
10 meg line on Telkom account was terrible. Afrihost has its days, but their service is second to none. As I found out the hard way by trying Crystalweb.

    That doesn’t add up:

    – Remember, the effect stacks.
    – Remember, only use one coin at a time, as the buff resets every time an Ultra is dropped

If I am killing him and myself, the buff resets…?

    I popped 1 in “Fallen SABER” = 0 exotic drop, 2 rare
    I popped 3 in “Shield Brothers” = 1 exotic drop, 3 rare

So, I think the latter explains the stacking effect a tad better

I did this as well! For my 20 Three of Coins I got only Invective!! I wasted all my strange coins… But to have my very first exotic I ever had in Destiny back at the year 2 power is just awesome… So not really mad at all!
