Destiny earned $47.5 million in its first month of release

Destiny is a golden child again. Remember when it launched and people moaned about the hype and how it wasn’t as great a game as we were promised? Well, it has become that game that everyone wanted it to be, and now the Taken King expansion is promising to breathe new life into the already re-popularized experience. But the guy who made it sound so great is still fighting for his share, and the fight is revealing some interesting stuff.

In case you forgot, the composer for Destiny who also worked on Halo back in the day, Marty O’Donnell was fired by Bungie. He subsequently sued, and the court documents have already shown some interesting aspects, like the fact that the whole story changed so close to launch. Now we find out just how much cash Bungie raked in from Destiny at the start.

According to the court documents, Destiny moved 6.3 million copies within its first month of release, earning over $47.5 million in revenue. On this day last year, Activision said that they had sold-in $500 million worth of stock. So, even with the ridiculously high development and marketing costs of Destiny, it seems that they were able to make a whole bunch of millions in that first month. I am just amazed by how much they continue to make each month as well.

Say what you want, but Destiny was and is still big business. It is a highly successful franchise for Activision and will continue to rake in tons of money while offering gamers hours of pew pew grinding exploration and leveling. Were you part of the original profit, or did you hold out until a month after launch? I’m curious to see how many people are taken in again by The Taken King.

That’s a lot of dollars! Explains how they’re able to afford a story now.

I doubt they have pulled in what they spent though. That’s a 10 year plan and a fuck load of grinding ahead.

As much as it pains me to say it… They have my moneys too… -_-
There’s a lot Bungie have gotten right with Density, as well as a lot they got wrong (Nolanbot >:-( ), but I still end up playing the game more than any other game I own.

It is all down to the gunplay and movement for me. There is just no other shooter that has such a good balance with gunplay… Until Thorn hit the Crucible, there went the balance!! Hahahaha

Even with the patch now nerfing it, it still kicks all sorts of butt. Gally as well. But there are a lot more auto rifles in crucible at the moment which is a nice change

I played the Beta and got the upgraded version on release date. I put my time into this game from the start. Back then a level 30 meant something. Then progressed to level 32. Did well over 50 raids, got all the Exotics, played as a Hunter, Titan and Warlock. BUT then it just became plain boring as hell. Same missions over and over and over. Lost total interest in this game. I will not give bunged Gee and craptavision another cent. PS is busy doing the mandatory 20 gig update at the moment. As for the Game, well there is effall story, the grind is just not worth the effort as the RNG drop rate is higher than the avg bunged gee programmer. I don’t mind grinding at all, but destiny is stingy. Warframe involves grinding, but you will always get a piece / part or something for your efforts. In Destiny I did the weekly’s every week only to be rewarded with a kak std gun from a nightfall or praise the Lord, 12 strange effing coins? Seriously. I got better stuff from doing random public events

It has changed a lot… The cryptarch is still a dick but there are some better loot dropping at the moment! I played 3 hours last night and got a purple engram… But the cryptarch can make that a blue gun so I am just leaving it there in my inventory!! Hahahaha
Have you heard the sirens singing come back yet? I bet you, you will be back for a while again sooner or later 🙂

Well technically it only needs more than one hour of exploration to be hours. 😉

    ? The Witcher 3 made more in the first 2 weeks. 3mill x $60 = $180million

Its sold over 6 million copies in 3 months.

But destiny had a $500 million production value. Half of that was marketing. The rest for the aging Beetle 😛

Which means we can expect half-arsed titles with stripped down narratives from Activision for the foreseeable future.

I’m not exactly sure what to make of this though… They made a lot of money, but was everyone satisfied? I’ve never caught on to the hype for this, it’s just(the crucifixion will have to be postponed for this one) bland… I don’t want to play a game where it’s such a stingy gamble to get any form of a reward… Don’t see the point really….
