Kill kill (2)

And that’s saying something for an animation series from Japan, which is practically fuelled by madness. For those of you who grew up watching Gurren Lagaan, good news! The creative geniuses behind that acclaimed series recently debuted Kill La Kill, which looks like a spiritual successor to that iconic reality-destroying series.

Set at Honnouji Academy, the series focuses on vagabond school girl Ryuko Matoi, as she tangles with the fearsome student council that controls the school and the surrounding city. Elite members of the school are gifted with Goku Uniforms, woven from life fibers that grant them superhuman abilities. There’s also a sub-plot about Ryuko’s murdered father, her ongoing rivalry with student council head Satsuki Kiryuin and enough visual LSD to drop an elephant.

Armed with a sentient school uniform, Ryuko gets her own special abilities and enough gratituitous fan service to keep tissue paper manufacturers in business for a long time because of frequent nosebleeds. The show isn’t without controversy, with Ryuko activating her uniform by feeding it blood in a manner that looks like she happens to be slitting her wrist, but isn’t actually.

Add to that the fact the less shame the wearer of the suit has, the more powerful they become, and their are some pretty risky scenes present. But beyond, there’s some top notch animation present, as well as a healthy dose of humour.

The entire art style just pops, and the fluidity that the battles are presented will make your eyes bleed. Even when the animation gets cheap, it still feels fantastic overall and it covers that rush jobs up with some bizarre scenarios.

It’s only a few episodes in, but Kill La Kill just replaced Attack On Titan as my favourite anime of 2013.

  1. Hmmm. I didn’t really like this all that much, But I expected this anime to be like Gurren Laggan , as it is Gainax after all and it has that Gurren Laggan spirit…but Gurren is my all time favourite anime so I think I’m gonna give it another go…but man….watching this anime in the bus is embarresing ..not to mention the numerous boners …ahem lol

freezing started off great, but youre right about the ecchi, it gradually got worse as it went along.
but the first season was really top notch, but then lost the plot, seems like its almost on the right track again with the current plot.

Sadly Freezing season 2 has had TOO much plot for my liking. Way too much talking and not enough “fighting” if you know what I mean.

But to be honest neither shows do it in an overtly perverse way, they kinda pass it off as the norm.

Where its at right now, has alot less bullshit than some of the other arcs.
atleast the main characters are back to fighting again.

when season 2 started with the mommy issues, masochistic step brothers and relationship bullshit, I just stopped reading.
kept an eye on it though, waiting for it to get ok again, current arc isnt bad though

Alright if you wanna go that way we might as well include the classics. FLCL is pretty out there but berserk is waaayyyyy worse IF you did not read the manga. (or watched the remake) And honorable mention goes to GTO.

this came up on my list of “things to watch now that im bored of everything else.”
Decided I’d give it a miss and watch Psycho Pass instead, looked less ridiculous.

But i didnt know it was done by the TTGL guys, will give it another look over.
