PlayStation 4 sales now nearly double the Xbox One

Paint.net for the win

The latest NPD figures were released last week while we were all sunning ourselves for the long weekend on our private yachts paid for by the bribes from the main distributors… er I mean we were sitting in squalor and eating rodents.

Anyway carrying on.

The latest figures are out and at the moment Sony is dominating Microsoft in the hardware sales. According to Microsoft they have now sold 5 million Xbox One consoles to retailers, no confirmation on how many of those 5 million have been picked up by consumers but I think a guess of 90% is fair. So we are estimating sales to consumers of 4.5 million.

Sony announced in early April that they had sold 7 million PlayStation 4’s to consumers so it is fair to extrapolate that over the last 18 days they could have sold another 1/2 million giving them a lead of around 3 million consoles.

But it’s not that clear cut. Sony is currently selling the PlayStation 4 in 49 countries while the Xbox One is only available to a select 13 countries and the PlayStation 4 is no longer seeing stock constraints. If the Xbox One was released worldwide it wouldn’t be inconceivable for it to catch up those 3 million sales.

And it’s $100 more so to the people thinking the race is over, you may want to count again.

As for software sales in America, according to the NPD, the clear winner for March was Titanfall for the Xbox One and PC while second place went to inFamous: Second Son which is exclusive for the PS4.

The rest of the list is made up mostly of cross-platform titles.

    1. Titanfall (Xbox One, PC)
    2. Infamous Second Son (PS4)
    3. South Park: The Stick Of Truth (PS3, 360, PC)
    4. Call Of Duty: Ghosts (PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, 360, PC)
    5. Dark Souls II (PS3, 360)
    6. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)
    7. NBA 2K14 (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, PC)
    8. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (PS3, Vita)
    9. The Lego Movie Videogame (PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, 360, Vita)
    10. Minecraft (360)

I’m glad to see South Park doing so well and the Call of Duty haters must be gutted to still see Ghosts raking in the money.

Did you spot the anomaly? Where is Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls? Well it only released late in March and the NPD doesn’t measure digital sales so don’t take this is any reason to think the title hasn’t sold well.

But the gap is far smaller if you take price in to account

      7mil x $500
      5mil x $600

(or whatever each concole costs. Point is the $100 diff)

the $100 difference makes the gap in profits far smaller and when you then take % wise of distribution areas it’s conceivable that if the xbox releases everywhere the PS4 is then the sales could very easily close the gap and at the small difference in profit very possibly overtake the PS4 (Not in units sold but simply just profit margins which is what it’s all about)

We don’t know the profit margins. The Kinect also costs quite a bit if I remember right.

for sure. But i want to point something out real quick:

          7mil x $500 = 3,500,000,000

          5mil x $600 = 3,000,000,000

          Difference = 500,000,000

          To make up the difference:
          500,000,000 / 600 = 833,333

So less than a million extra Xbox units need to be sold to equal the same “price bracket”.

So yes obviously cost to company of each console needs to really be worked in there but I am sure it wouldn’t be that big a difference in profit per unit sold. In fact I am sure the extra $100 for the kinect is nowhere near what Microsoft themselves pay to have the kinect made.

Just some food for thought there.

So if Microsoft sold 6 million units they’d have made a bigger gross income from the unit than what Sony did off of 7 million units….. scary stuffs

That wasn’t quick, that was TL;DR ;P Even though I did read it.

I made pretty much the same point when Gavin trolled about 98% of 2K’s revenue coming from console games.

YA but in the console “wars”, gamers dont care about how much the console makers make, they pay attention to how many of them are sold by sony and microsoft.

Xbox One is a huge net loss. They poured billions and billions into it and sales are now shipping under 360 numbers. The Xbox brand itself is also a net loss with no sign of profit. That is why Microsoft shareholders keep demanding it be sold off, it only bleeds money.

According to IHS, MS loses $28 per console at $500, Sony loses $18 per console at $400. Sony loses less per console than MS. With $50 price drops and free game/12 month Live bundles, MS loses even more per console.

It’s not that cut and dry. Microsoft is giving away Titanfall with X1’s, as well as a year of XBL, and for several major regions it’s at $450, not $500.

It’s actually pretty clear cut, Gavin. Know why? Because the folks who WANT X1’s, in countries where it hasn’t been ‘officially’ released, have them already. It’s why games like Titanfall actually ranked on software sales charts…in countries where the X1 isn’t released. South Africa, for example. I know there are a few people on this site, who live in a country where the X1 hasn’t yet launched…but they already have an X1.

This may be an entirely wrong observation but…

In early december, Sony announced it had sold 2.1 million PS4’s.

VGChartz puts PS4 sales for the year to date at 2.8 million.

    2.1 + 2.8 = 4.9

That means that Sony is claiming it sold 2.1 million PS4’s in December alone. That doesn’t strike me as completely honest, especially when they announced they had sold 1.2 million in December when they discussed this in early january.

    So let’s add the numbers up : 2.1 + 1.2 + 2.8 = 6.1

Yet Sony is saying they sold 7 million consoles to date. Which begs the question : There is almost a million consoles just added onto that number seemingly out of nowhere. Where did they come from? I ask this because Sony has, in the past, been caught lying about sales numbers before (When they claimed to sell 4 million Sony Move controllers and then had to admit to only selling 2 million)…

LOL!! This is even more outrageously stupid than your “microsoft sold 6 million xboxes” estimate when it turns out they ONLY SHIPPED 5!

“During a CES keynote this morning, Sony’s Andrew House revealed that more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold globally as of December 28, 2013.”

THEY SOLD 4.2 MILLION IN 2013 NOT 2.8. HOW CAN YOU BE THIS STUPID AND GET IT WRONG OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

This is what microsoft fanboys are actually like – dumb, constantly wrong or lying, and maliciously hateful towards PS4’s success.
